In my language arts classes, I like to put the "ART" in language arts! We will do many different kinds of
poetry assignments. Students will be writing many different forms of poetry this year, hopefully
building upon knowledge gained in the elementary grades. We will also be discussing classic
poetry in-depth and writing open-response questions related to poetry in our Writing Journals.
Much of the poetry we will be writing will reflect awareness of figurative language as a means of
expression. Many of the assignments will be graded using a rubric. Here is a list of some of the types
of poetry we will read as examples and then create some of our own as we learn about meter, rhyme,
rhythm, and other elements of poetry:
Diamante
Riddle
Limerick
Haiku
Free Verse
Rhyming Couplets
Found Poetry
