| In my language arts classes, I like to put the "ART" in language arts! We
will do many different kinds of poetry assignments. Monthly, students will
be writing different forms of poetry. We will also be discussing classic
poetry in-depth and writing open-response questions related to poetry in our
Daily Journal Writing.
Monthly poetry assignments: Often times these assignments count for
homework grades. Poetry assignments are expected to be completed in final
draft form, carefully edited, and if artwork is required, no pencil can be
seen on the final copy. Please ask if you are unsure about what tools can
be used for each assignment.
September - Biopoem
This is a biographical poem with very specific directions to follow. It is
a graded assignment. Please add collage artwork to this poem.
October - Spooky Rhyming Couplets
To accompany our Haunted Preposition Scenes (which include at least 20
prepositional phrases, we'll be writing poems with rhyming couplets. These
will be displayed with their seasonal scene to make a monsterous,
multitasking masterpiece!
November - Honoring our Men and Women in Uniform: We will express our
respect and appreciation for the men and women in our armed forces by
creating diamante poetry. These special poems will be mailed along with a
friendly letter to service members who are currently overseas. Another
option will be to dedicate a poem and letter to a veteran whom you know. The
secret to a great diamante poem is selecting precise and appropriate nouns,
adjectives and verbs - always a good idea!
December - Ornament Poetry
This is an in-class project where students will write descriptive color
poetry about the colors and images they see during the holidays. Vivid
colors will be brainstormed, rhyming dictionaries will be provided, and
editing will be completed primarily in class. This will count as a
homework/classwork assignment.
January - Self-Portrait
January's poetry assignment requires children to use such devices as
similes, metaphors, and personification to bring their true selves onto
paper. The self-portrait will count as a homework/classwork assignment.
February - Self-Portrait for a Loved One
This month students will take the colorful language that they learned about
in February and create poems for a special someone in their lives.
March - Limericks
The challenge will be for students to write a limerick about themselves.
This fun type of poetry always proves to be a hilarious assignment. This
will be graded as classwork/homework.
April - Word Splash Poems
This month students will be asked to write a poem using splashes of words
from their favorite novel.
May - This is Mine Poetry
Students get a chance to be brats! Well, sort of. . . In this type of poem,
students will choose an item that they truly love and write in a humorous
and creative manner about it.
June - Alliteration Poetry
Several silly sentences serve as sweet success, some students say. These
poems will be grades as a homework assignment as we wrap up our poetry in
June.
