Mountview Middle School
Language Arts – Grade 8 Blue
September 5, 2007

Dear Eighth Grade Students, Parents and/or Guardians:

As your child’s Language Arts teacher it is my hope that your child will
have both an enjoyable and productive year. I am excited to explore a world
of reading and writing this upcoming year, and plan on giving students the
tools and knowledge required to do their best personal writing and relate
literature to themselves and the world around them. This year your child
will work with a variety of genres – from drama to fantasy to nonfiction, as
well as have weekly grammar exercises and daily writing prompts. I plan on
utilizing blogging technology, literature circles and plenty of other
enriching activities to help students develop a positive relationship with
reading and writing. To give you a better idea of class expectations, please
note the following:

•	Outside reading: Students will be required to have a pleasure
reading book with them at all times, and participate in a minimum of 60
minutes of outside reading per week, which they will log daily in their
journal. This valuable reading time will prepare students for monthly book
talks given on the book they have read (1-2 completed each term). Book talks
will be 15% of their grade.

•	Daily participation in writing and classroom discussion: Students
come into my classroom with the ability to earn 100% participation points by
bringing necessary supplies, participating in classroom discussions and
responding to daily writing prompts. Participation will be 15% of their
grade.

•	Quizzes: Quizzes will take a variety of forms, and will be announced
at least 1 day in advance. Quizzes are 20% of their grade.

•	Tests: Tests will be given at the end of a unit, with students using
their notebooks and class handouts to study. Students will receive a study
guide in class prior to the test.

•	Projects: Projects will be assigned throughout the school year,
which will include a grading rubric. In most cases, students will be given
class time to work on the project, and may also be required to work on it
outside of school. Tests and projects count for 30% of their grade.

•	Homework: Homework will be checked for completion each day it is
assigned. Students will receive full, half or zero credit depending on the
quality and completeness of their work. At least one homework assignment per
week will be collected and graded. Checked and graded homework is 20% of
their grade.

In addition to working hard and participating in classroom activities and
discussion, I would ask that students come to class each day with the
following supplies:
•	Writing utensil – pencil or a blue or black pen
•	At least a one-subject notebook
•	A pocket folder that can be left in the classroom for the duration
of the year
•	Colored pencils, markers or crayons (I will notify students ahead of
time when these materials are needed for class)

Students may see me regarding makeup or missed work in a timely manner, and
I encourage them to seek help or after school meetings whenever necessary.
Classroom topics and assignments will also be made available at
http://teacherweb.com. Students may access my page by selecting Mountview
Middle School, then Ramian to view my page.

Again, it is my hope that your child has an enjoyable experience in the
eighth grade. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me with
a note, via email at Caroline_Ramian@wrsd.net or by calling the main office.

Sincerely,

Miss Ramian
