6th Grade Spanish Syllabus
Instructor: Profesora M. White Academic Year: 2009-2010
E-mail: mwhite@mvrcs.org
Teacher Web
http://teacherweb.com/MA/MysticValleyRegionalCharterSchool/MrsWhite/
Required Materials:
• 3 Ring Binder
• 4-5 Binder dividers
• 1-2 packets of loose leaf lined paper
• 1 two pocket folder
• 1 Spanish-English Dictionary
• 1 red pen
• 1 blue pen
• 1-2 pencils
Description:
The course is designed to give beginning and experienced Spanish students a
broad understanding of various components of the Spanish language building on
the language acquired in previous years, as vocabulary is expanded and more
difficult grammatical concepts are introduced. It will teach language skills
and equips students with learning strategies that will aid them in their
future language studies. It will also develop students’ communicative
proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in a gradual,
logical progression. Students will gain an understanding of how language is
structured and how they can use their knowledge to express their own needs
and talk about the world around them. By developing and refining their skills
of observation, students will also acquire a basic understanding and
appreciation of the diversity of cultures in the Spanish-speaking world.
Grading Policy:
Test: 15%
Quizzes: 25%
Participation: 25%
Homework/Classwork: 25%
Notebook: 10%
Test:
Students will have a test at the end of every unit which will be approximate
every 2-3 weeks. They will receive a worksheet packet at the beginning of the
unit that is the major part of the students study guide. We will work on
these packets in class. They may also receive other supplemental material to
help them study and prepare for the test. Test format will normally consist
of vocabulary matching, multiple choice questions, open response questions,
and listening response questions.
Quizzes:
Students will generally have 1 or 2 quizzes per unit. Quizzes will normally
consist of 10 short questions on material recently covered in class. Students
should generally always be prepared for a quiz. Quizzes are a good way for
students to assess an area in the unit they may need further review on prior
to a test.
Participation:
Class participation is very important in a foreign language course. This is
how most of the learning and assessing happens. Students will be able to
participate in class through various venues. I am encouraging students to
participate in class discussion 5 times a class period. They can also earn
participation points by being prepared and following directions first time
given as well as being an active member in group and individual class
projects.
Homework/Classwork:
The students will receive 1 Spanish homework assignment a week. This
assignment will be included in the weekly homework packet which the student
will receive on Friday. The due date will always be on Thursday throughout
the academic year (unless a holiday, then it will be due the next day).
Students should do their best quality work with their homework and classwork.
I recommend they use any of the resources that I provide them with (i.e.
notes, handouts, previous exams or quizzes) and their Spanish-English
dictionary. Below is the 6th grade homework policy.
Third through Sixth Grade
The third through sixth grade students will receive homework assignments on
Friday and the completed work is due the following Thursday. Each week the
student will receive weekly binder homework in addition to daily homework.
Each student is expected to bring his/her homework binder/planner to school
every day to encourage responsibility and organizational planning. There is a
consequence if they do not bring their binder/planner to school. Teachers
will provide the homework in multiple facets either on the assignment
page/packet, website, and/or posted in the classroom It is the student’s
responsibility to complete the work and return it when due. A parent/guardian
is required to sign the assignment page/planner weekly for Friday morning to
be checked by the homeroom teacher. Students will receive a card change/A-
Plan warning if the homework assignment page /planner is not signed. Each
month students are required to complete a content area project or book report
that is an extension of their in class unit. The project will be assigned on
the first Monday of the month and is due on the last Friday of the month.
Consequences for Homework Infractions 3-6
All Homework infractions will be noted in the teachers’ gradebook and
student’s report card.
First Quarterly Offense: A notation will be marked on the monthly calendar in
the student’s homework binder/blue folder or planner to the parent/guardian
stating the homework infraction. The completed homework must be returned the
following day.
Second and Third Quarterly Offenses: A notation will be marked on the monthly
calendar in the student’s homework binder/blue folder or planner to the
parent/guardian stating the homework infraction. The completed homework must
be returned the following day. A card change warning will result for each
late or missing assignment after the first missing assignment.
Fourth and Subsequent Quarterly Offenses: The student will be assigned after
school detention every day until the homework is completed. The
parent/guardian will be informed of the infraction, and may be required to
accompany the student to school on the day of the student’s return to map out
a homework completion strategy with the Lead Teacher or Leadership Team.
Notebook:
The students are expected to maintain an organized and thorough binder. They
are expected to keep good notes of ALL I write on the board. They are also
expected to maintain all handouts and notes neatly organized in their binder.
They may NOT remove anything from their binder unless I have instructed them
to.

Below are some of the main classroom rules. This list is in addition to the
Rules and Regulations found in the Student & Parent Handbook. This list can
