Where are my child's assignments kept?

After the assignment has been corrected and discussed in class, students
sort them into their subject folders which are kept inside their desks.
The subject folders will help students with their organizational
skills and reduces the risk of misplacing papers. I keep all tests,
quizzes, projects, and writing assignments in a student portfolio to be
used for report cards. Assessments are shared during routine parent
conferences and sent home at the end of each term.

What are the consequences for not doing homework?

Grade deduction, loss of free time, or both. Students are not graded on
the accuracy of their homework, but they are marked on whether or not
they attempted to solve the problem to the best of their ability and made
appropriate corrections if there were any mistakes.

How can I help in the classroom?

Would ten year olds find your job interesting? Do you like performing in
front of a classroom of bright-eyed kids? Contact me if you would like to
share your professional experiences or talents with our class.

Readers are welcome to visit as well. If you have a favorite children's
book that you would like to share with our class, please contact me so
that we can make necessary arrangements.

If you have any old board games that are collecting dust in closets, our
class would love to have them for indoor recess days.

We seem to have a room full of allergies this year (myself included). Any
spare tissue boxes you would be willing to donate would be appreciated.

Why has my child been marked tardy or absent?

Students are admitted to their homeroom at 8:35. Students who have not
arrived in the room by 8:45 are marked tardy. If a student enters school
after 8:45, he or she must sign in at the office to avoid being marked
absent.

How many days does my child have to complete homework after being absent?

Students have the same number of days to complete the assignments as
they were absent from school, (i.e., two days absent = two days to make up
the work).

My child is being dismissed differently today. What should I do?

If there is a change in your child's routine dismissal, a signed note with
contact information must be brought to school on or before that day.
Telephoning or e-mailing Mrs. Linda Drew in the office is also acceptable.

What kind of dress is appropriate?

Please consult the student handbook for acceptable attire. Students
wearing clothing that is deemed inappropriate may be sent home to change
into something appropriate for elementary school. Students should
also dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable clothing and
sneakers on days that we have Physical Education.

Can we have drinks in class?

Students are encouraged to bring a healthy beverage with their snack and
lunch. Students may keep water bottles on their desk throughout the
school day.

What items are not allowed in your classroom?

All electronic devices, trading cards, make-up, hair brushes, any noise-
making products, and any other device that may disrupt the learning
environment are not permitted. Expensive and valuable items should be left
at home where they are safe.

When are parent conferences held?

Early release days have been scheduled for the purpose of parent
conferencing around the time report cards are issued. I will send home a
letter requesting a date and time to meet with you. If you would like to
meet with me prior to this, please contact me. I would be happy to
schedule a meeting with you to discuss your child's growth and progress in
grade 5.

Will my child be ready to face the challenges of middle school?

Absolutely. Speak with any former fifth grade students or their parents
and they will attest to the fact that they are more than prepared for
sixth grade.
