How can I help my child succeed in school?
Read, read, read. Read to your child and have your child read to you.
How long should the homework take?
It depends. Sometimes the homework is very simple and will not take long.
Other times the homework requires real thinking, organizing ideas, and
writing. This may take longer. But never more than 25 minutes; usually 15
minutes will be enough.
I suggest that you make a plan with your child as to when s/he wants to do
the homework. (Right away after school; after some play time; before dinner;
after dinner; before T.V.) This is an important job. Make a special work area
free as possible from distractions. Help is good, but don't do it for them. A
nice snack may be in order, but make sure the hands and table top are clean.
Why is homework important?
Homework is a way to reinforce the lessons that were taught during the day.
It helps me see if your child is able to do the work independently. It's one
of the ways I can determine if your child will be prepared for second grade.
