NAME:
Gertrude C. Miller Library
SCHOOL:
Rockport High/Middle School
Philosophy:
The library is an area of the school where students have the opportunity
to be effective users of information. Information for research and personal
enrichment is available in the library through books, newspapers, magazines,
and electronic formats. Students are encouraged to be active learners in
the library. The library staff strives to offer an atmosphere of mutual
respect and courtesy. The library endeavors to be helpful in assisting
students and others in the learning community. The library is a place for
quiet serious research, independent study or reading.
The Gertrude C. Miller Library provides library services in the Rockport
High and Rockport Middle School, which are located in the same building. At
the present time, it is staffed by one professional, who is assisted by a
parent volunteer. The library is open when school is in session. It has
approximately 12,000 books, 50 periodicals, and 7 computers for homework and
independent research. The library seats about 60 students out of a total
combined population of 600 students. The adjoining computer lab provides 25
computers for use by classes. Students can access the Internet and electronic
databases for research. The Gertrude C. Miller Library is a member of the
Massachusetts Library System, and communication and
cooperation takes place with the Rockport Public Library in order to meet
student needs in the most effective way.
