THEME: Letter I – Mr. I arrived this week and he is covered with impossible
inches.
SONG & RHYME: The children will sing “Itsy Bitsy Spider” song using many
different voices.
SHARED READING: We will read Cricket Rohman’s book, I Can Draw. This book
uses both the long and short I with words such as iguana, ink, ice cream and
igloo.
LANGUAGE ARTS: The children will practice writing I in both capital and
lowercase. We will read Ira Sleeps Over and create an illustration and
caption about our own sleepover and what we would bring on a sleepover.
We will read Ice Cream by Joy Cowley, a book that lists fun places to eat ice
cream; for example, in the snow, on a hill, in a tree, or in the rain. The
children will practice building these phrases using plastic letters.
MATH: We will read “Inch by Inch” by Leo Lionni. The children will
investigate a 12 inch ruler and then use it to measure colored strips of paper
that are varying lengths. They will record their measurements. They will
also create a paper inchworm ruler to use at home.
We will read “I Am Growing” by Aliki and we will measure our height and record
it in inches.
We will talk about probability, what is certain, impossible and possible. The
children will play a game with two-colored sticks and record their findings on
a recording sheet.
REMINDERS:
PLEASE send in a note each time your child has an after-school activity. It
is very difficult for us to track this information week to week. Thanks for
your understanding.
Children need to bring in shoes when they wear boots to school.

THEME: Letter B - Mr. B arrived displaying his “beautiful buttons”. We will
sort, count, compare and create with buttons. Mr. B also brought his pet bear
and we will talk about bears all week.
SIGHT WORD: for
SHARED READING: Our big book this week is entitled, Bennie. The children will
create their own illustration from this book and print a caption. We will
also read “Bear Facts”, a nonfiction book about what bears eat and do
throughout the year. The children will also sing the “Bear Facts” song and
create a bear fact/fiction class book.
READING/LANGUAGE ARTS: The children will practice writing the letter “B,b” and
do our weekly Listen & Write Activity. They will play a phonics game where
they will identify “B” miniatures and place them in a bear box. They will
also complete a cut & paste paper putting “b” pictures in a box. We will read
“Corduroy” and the children will create a paper corduroy bear.
MATH: We will read the Button Book, which beautifully illustrates the many
ways to sort a box of buttons. The children will take turns putting sets of
buttons in small to large order and create their own display. The children
will also work with a pan balance, using clay and unifix cubes to observe and
determine how to add and subtract weight in order to balance the scale. We
will also create bear number stories in addition and subtraction.
WE ARE ASKING EACH CHILD TO BRING IN A STUFFED BEAR ON FRIDAY and we will
graph our bears by size and color, and read as many bear stories as possible!.
ODDS & ENDS:
Community Service: We are working with the Council on Aging to make birthday
cards for senior citizens in Littleton. They say our cards are better than
Hallmark’s! We will read a very touching book entitled, “Wilfrid Gordon
MacDonald Partridge”. It’s about a young boy who befriends elderly people
living in a nursing home next door to his house.
We have seen LOTS of birds at our birdfeeders: chickadee, titmouse,
woodpecker, American goldfinch, sparrow, and a Cardinal!
