What should I do if I am absent from class?

If you are able, email me to find out what you have missed. Check here for
assignment due days or copies of handouts. Remember, if you have an excused
absence or were sick, you have the same number of extra days to make up
assignments as you were out sick.

How can I improve my grade?

Evaluate your effort. Are you dedicating quality time to your work? Are you
studying ahead of time for quizzes and tests? Are you paying attention in
class? If no, work on these things. If yes...

Come see me. We can work on extra help as needed or talk about alternative
study techniques to help.

10H: What do I need to do to get into 11AP?

11AP is an intensive writing course. You must be able to read challenging
pieces of writing and quickly compose synthesizing analysis or commentary on
these pieces. You should have a natural knack for grammar and enjoy mulling
over word choice. Be prepared to do many revisions of the same writing piece.

In recommending students, I look for strong A students who are consistently
active in class participation. They have an excellent handle on the grammar
we learn, a strong vocabulary, and solid writing skills. In addition to these
overall criteria, I will also place a heavy emphasis on how well you do on
your controlled research paper and may ask to see your PSAT scores as well.

How do I get extra (help, recommendations, essay editing, etc.) from you?

Look at my schedule and find a common time that we can meet. If one of the
class periods does not work, I am here after school Monday-Thursday, and stay
late on Wednesdays. Schedule the meeting ahead of time and make sure that you
show up. Come with specific questions. Don't say, "How do I improve my test
scores?" or "What's wrong with this paper?" Instead, ask questions like, "Why
do I keep writing run-ons? How can I avoid this?" or "How can I strengthen
the supporting details I'm using to defend my thesis?"

How do I turn in my work?

Work is due at the beginning of class. Homework is usually passed in to the
white baskets on the window sill. If you are absent, bring in your homework
when you return. If you need to print something, and your printer doesn't
work, email a copy of the assignment to me so that I know you have completed
it on time. Then it is YOUR responsibility to print the assignment (email it
to yourself or upload it to GoogleDocs to print here at school). You should
be planning ahead of time so that you don't run into last-minute printer
catastrophes on a regular basis.
