Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone enjoyed their holidays and had a wonderful break.
With the new year we enter an intense period of teaching and learning.  The pace will quicken and expectations will rise.  We will be discussing and posting a "No Excuses" list of skills that must be consistently demonstrated with automaticity at this point in the year.  This will include knowing and using a proper heading, correct friendly letter form, proper capitalization, end punctuation, commas in a series, common sight words, basic math facts, etc.  Gentle reminders from you to check work and demonstrate best skills and effort will be welcome.
Thank you all again for the thoughtful holiday gifts.  Best wishes to you all in 2012!

Report cards go home this week.  Please remember to celebrate all that your children have accomplished since September. They have transitioned to a new school with high expectations. They are shifting from learning to read to reading to learn. Deeper thinking and writing more extensively is expected throughout their days.  Please remember my comments from parent orientation;  twos are common and acceptable grades as long as their effort is consistent.  All students have a right to be proud of their performance, just as all of them have room for improvement.  I am proud of them all, and hope that you will convey both my pride and yours as you discuss the report with your child.  I look forward to conferences and the opportunity to discuss this with you.

Sincerely,
Gayle MacElhiney
