Classroom Expectations

CLASSROOM STANDARDS

Classroom Behavior:   Students are expected to demonstrate respectful behavior in all
interactions, as described in our classroom rules and in the
Parent/Student Handbook.
Assessment:   In addition to daily observation and interaction with your children, a portfolio containing samples of your children's written work will be utilized to assess their development, progress, and mastery of skills and concepts in all curriculum
areas. This portfolio will be shared with you on a regular basis.
Grading:   The Elementary Report Card (for Grades 1 and 2) reflects the children's
development in the academic areas using the following letter grades:
O, S+, S, S-, N, U
O (Outstanding) indicates that a child is performing consistently far beyond grade- appropriate expectation in that academic area.  Please note that this grade is
not considered to be the goal for children who are performing well on grade
level, but reserved to distinguish a child who demonstrates unusual talent in a particular area.
S+, S, S- (Satisfactory) indicates that a child is performing within the expected
range of grade-appropriate academic achievement.
N (Needs Improvement) indicates that the child's performance is inconsistent,
and that s/he is having difficulty applying grade-appropriate skills and concepts independently.

U (Unsatisfactory) indicates that the child is not performing on grade level.

Report Cards are distributed after each trimester. They are preceded by a
Progress Report halfway through each trimester. Progress reports will inform you
of your child's strengths and areas of need.

THAT ALL-IMPORTANT HOMEWORK ISSUE
Here are some quidelines and expectations for you and your second grader regarding homework.
  • The bringing home, completing, and returning to school of all homework is your child's responsibility, not yours.
  • Homework will usually be given four nights a week with a book report given on Friday
  • Homework is due the next day unless otherwise indicated in the assignment notebook.  Book reports are usually due the following Wednesday.
  • The homework should be done independently by your child and should take no more than 1/2 hour to 45 minute
  • If your child needs help, guidance on your part is certainly endorsed, however, avoid too much involvement and homework battles
  • Encourage your child to proofread and edit language homework for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. However, do not correct the work.  Your child should self-correct or circle any words of which s/he is unsure
  • Missed homework will be made up either the next day or the next evening.  If there are a number of nights missed, your child will have a few nights to make it up.
  • Please sign your child's assignment notebook for each assignment.  This indicates that you are aware of the homework.

This is your opportunity to step back and let your child do the work!! Enjoy!!!
