Basic Algebra Grade 8 2009 -2010
Text: Mathematics Algebra I, Pearson/Prentice-Hall Publishers, 2004.
Grading Policy:
Tests: 60%
Quizzes/Homework: 30%
Participation: 10%
Behavior: Everyone is expected to treat each other with respect. See handbook for general policy.
Late Work and Make-up Work: Since advance notice is given for quizzes and tests, a student absent only the day before a quiz or test is expected to take the test with the class upon return. Students absent only on the day of the quiz or test will take it upon return.
Materials required: Each student is required to bring the following to class: the text, a one-subject notebook for math only, a two-pocket folder, completed homework assignment, a pencil, and a red pen for grading. The folder must be used to keep all homework and quizzes for the current chapter, until a final chapter test is given. Occasionally, folder checks will take place and will be part of the participation grade.
Homework Policy: Homework is expected to be completed at home with all work shown. Homework handed in one day late will receive a deduction of 25%. Incomplete and missing homework will be started during recess. If it is not handed in the second day, it will be graded as a 0. An update form will be given for the first two “missing homework” offenses. After that, each missing homework within the term will result in after school detention. Only selected homework assignments will be graded and will be considered a quiz grade. Homework below a 70% will require parent signature, due the following day. Occasionally, a student will be given an opportunity to do corrections for extra points, up to a maximum of 75%.
Quizzes and Tests: Tests will always be announced ahead of time and posted on my website. All graded homework are considered quizzes. Quizzes based on the previous homework are occassionally given in class.
Participation: Class participation will be 10% of the final grade. Participation includes: 1) coming to class prepared with the required materials, including updated folder; 2) sitting in your seat right away, and having the appropriate material needed for class ready at the start of class; 3) behavior; and 4) answering appropriately when called on.
Extra Help: Extra help is available on Mondays and Wednesdays during recess. Other times may be scheduled, if needed.
Teacher website: Homework is posted on my teacher website at teacherweb.com/MA/StAugustineSchool/MrsBordogna
Communication: Students tend to be most successful when there is a clear 3-way communication path between the student, parent, and teacher. E-mail is preferred, pbordogna@staugustineandover.org, or send a note and I will respond by phone or note.
