Keyboarding Homework, Week 4 - Due Week of March 1, 2010 - ALL KEYS

When you are sure that you are using the correct fingers
on ALL KEYS,
Start practicing the following sentence:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Notice that this sentence has every letter of the alphabet
in it.

Type the sentence as slowly as necessary.
Do not worry about speed.
Keep typing this sentence over and over;
Remember all you have learned about proper keyboarding
techniques.
(Eyes and palms off the keyboard, etc.)

Keyboarding Homework, Week 3 - Week of February 8, 2010 - Due After Vacation

Bottom Row Keys ZXCVBNM,./ Homerow reaches to bottom row.

Type: azazazaz^ sxsxsxsx^ dcdcdcdc^ etc. Say the letters as you strike
them. Type in this pattern all the way to ;/;/;/;/. Then reverse the
order, typing /;/;/;/;^ .l.l.l.l^ ,k,k,k,k etc,. Saying each letter or
symbol as you strike the key. After you do these several times, work from
the third row up towards the home row. Type zazazaza^ xsxsxsxs^ etc. When
you think you have memorized the keys, try typing the following
words; and, them, then, but, and last week's words the, they, you, he,
she, said, say, is, are, was, were, for, this, that, there. Remember to
keep your fingers curved, your palms off the keyboard, and your eyes on the
screen, NOT on the keyboard.

*NOTE: Good job! You have memorized the entire keyboard. Pat yourself on the
back, but not for too long. You still need to practice. We will now begin
working on speed. The good news is that once you have reached twenty to
twenty-one words per minute (wpm), your fingers should
automatically remember the correct placement on the keyboard.

Week 4 - Due 3/1/10 - The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
Week 5 - Due 3/9/10 - Type the alphabet - ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ.

Please see instructions below for details! Also Keyboard Practice Handout Page.

Keyboarding Homework, Week 2 - Week of February 1, 2010 - Due Next Week

Top Row Keys QWERTYUIOP - Homerow reaches to Top Row
Type: qaqaqaqa^ wswswsws^ edededed^ etc. Say the letters as your strike
them. Type in this pattern all the way to p;p;p;p;. Then reverse the
order, typing p;p;p;p;^ olololol^ ikikikik^ etc., saying each letter as you
strike the key.

After you do this several times, work form the home row up,
strike the key. After you do this several times, work from the home row up,
typing aqaqaqaq^ swswswsw^ etc., If you think your fingers have memorized
the keys, try typing the following words: there, the, they, you, he, she,
it, this, that, is, are, was, were, will, for.

These are words that are used frequently. If you learn to type them as a unit, your speed (words per
minute) wpm will increase. Remember: Do not look at the keyboard.
*NOTE: Again, the reason for this practice is to teach your fingers the
correct keys to achieve muscle memory. Also remember, I am not looking
for speed at this point, but I am looking for accuracy.

Keyboarding Homework, Week 1 - Week of January 25, 2010

Middle Row Keys - Homerow keys reach to G & H.

Type: aaaa^ssss^dddd^ etc. (The symbol ^ means space.) Say the letter as
you strike it. Type in this pattern all the way to ;;;;. Then reverse the
order: ;;;;^ lll^kkkk^ saying semicolon semicolon semicolon semicolon
space, etc. as you strike the keys/space bar.

*NOTE: The reason for this practice is to teach your fingers the correct
keys. Your muscles are developing what is known as muscle memory.
Practice as instructed for at least ten minutes, three times a week. Then
see if you can type some words such as dad, sad, had, has, lad, fad, as,
all ask, lads, fall, glass, lass, gag, hag. You should avoid looking at the
keys.

Remember, I am not looking for speed at this point, I am looking for
accuracy. Check your paper keyboard if you have any doubt about which finger
to use on a key. Remember to reach for g and h from the f and j keys
with quick typing strokes and to go back to those home keys immediately
after typing each g and/or h.

Rules of Keyboarding

1. Fingers should be bend and fingertips should rest light on the middle
row of letters(home row) , stretching upward, downward, and sideways as
necessary, and returning immediately to the home row position.

2. Space bar should be struck with one thumb.

3. For right-hand capitals, depress the left shift key with the left
pinky while you strike the key with your right hand.

4. For left-hand capitals, depress the right shift key with the right
pinky while you strike the key with your left hand.

5. The wrap feature of word-processing programs eliminate the need to
strike the return key until the end of a paragraph.

6. Use only one space after periods, colons, exclamation point, question
marks, or quotations marks.
