WELCOME TO FIRST GRADE

SOCIAL STUDIES PAPERS

This week in your child's folder there was a Social Studies paper.  As we begin to do more Social Studies during the second trimester, I will be sending home study guides.  Because the Social Studies units are so spread out your child will be bringing home papers to study from each time we work on a unit.  The first unit we are working on in regards to these papers is THEN AND NOW.  These papers are marked with an orange color on them.  Please keep these papers in your child's folder so that you can use them to review when we are ready to have an assessment on the unit.  I will let you know when the assessment will  be and when to take the papers out of their folder.  Each unit will be marked with a different color and I will let you know when we begin and finish each unit.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding our Social Studies procedure. 

 

HOMEWORK GRADING POLICY

 

Our first month of having homework went pretty well. There were very little missing homework assignments.  Please remember that I consider three or more missing homework assignments excessive and will deduct points from your child's grade.  I have some concerns with the neatness and quality of some of the papers that are being passed in for homework.  ALL HOMEWORK SHOULD BE NEAT AND YOUR CHILD'S BEST EFFORT.  I have been giving a check plus and checks however beginning next week I will also be giving check minus for unacceptable work.  Children will be given check plus for neat printing, coloring and cutting;  a check will be given to all work completed that is not colored or has somewhat acceptable printing and cutting.  A check minus will be given for unacceptable coloring,cutting and especially printing.  When your child is doing homework and they choose to color it should be in the lines and appropriate colors, printing always should be neat especially when they are printing sentences and words, cutting should always be on the lines and glued down neatly on the page.  If your child's work is not done to your liking I would suggest that you make them redo it.  It is very important that you monitor your child's work and impress upon them the importance of being neat and doing their best.  All homework papers should always include both their first and last name.  Please remember that homework serves as an important tool in assessment and also is preparing them to do quality work in the upper grades.  Thank you for your help with this matter.
