This year marks my thirteenth year as a teacher, and my eleventh year
here at TJHS. I received my Bachelor's degree in English from Framingham
State College and my Master's degree in English from Fitchburg State College.
My love of reading and writing naturally led me into English, even though I
began my college career as a science major!
I am passionate about literature, and I believe that somewhere out
there is a book for everyone - it's just a matter of finding it. I am also
convinced that we can all become better writers, the same we become better
at anything - by practicing. Together we will share strategies to make us
all better readers and writers. I know that we will enjoy our journey
together this year!
When I am not reading and writing, I enjoy spending time with my
family, my husband David and my daughter Megan. On weekends you might find
us hiking, biking, or horseback riding. Our menagerie includes two cats,
Shadow and Callie, one dog, Molly, and our horse, Milo.
My goal is that each of my students will become stronger, more
sophisticated readers and writers, more confident public speakers, more
thoughtful listeners, and to use these skills to become critical thinkers.
I am never more proud of my students than when they exhibit their ability to
look at both sides of a situation, and argue an issue based on evidence or a
deep understanding of the problem.
In English this year we are putting away the chalk, and using a brand
new Promethean Activboard, the latest in interactive whiteboard technology.
The Activboard will allow us to create and revise written pieces together,
access the web for author interviews, have fun learning vocabulary and
grammar, and even create our own digital stories!
Writing Workshop activities will allow each student to work on writing
pieces with the support of their peers and in conferences with me. We will
be reading and discussing novels, plays, poetry, and non-fiction together as
a class. Students will also be expected to choose their own titles during
the year to have as their free-reading book to enjoy during SSR.
