Students in all grades have been working very hard in the library throughout
the winter.
• Kindergarten students are beginning to learn about nonfiction books,
and will be borrowing from a selected group of nonfiction books appropriate
for their age and grade level.
• First graders studied traditional fairy tales, and have moved on to
complete a unit on D.B. Johnson and his “Henry” stories (loosely based on the
life of Henry David Thoreau). Did you know that Henry once walked all the way
from Concord to Fitchburg?
• Second graders are learning about fractured fairy tales, focusing on
the many versions of the Cinderella story. They will soon be writing outlines
for their own Cinderella character. Ask them to tell you about Bubba The
Cowboy Prince.
• Third graders have completed learning the skills and techniques
required for reading nonfiction. We discussed the importance of reading not
only the text, but the charts, graphs, diagrams, maps, and pictures as well.
We are concluding our study of nonfiction with the reading of several
biographies.
• Fourth grade students are just about finished with their
Canada/Mexico projects. They have done a FABULOUS job! In a few weeks they
will bring home their completed work. Students used encyclopedias, books, and
web sites to do research on their country. They used the IIM research method
to gather and organize the facts that they found. Their focus was the
location, history, geography, government, and culture of the country. The
final project, which the students will soon begin, is to design a postcard.
We want to make you aware of two upcoming events, made possible by the
sponsorship, hard work, and dedication of the PTO. FIRST, our annual Book
Fair will be held during the week after spring vacation, April 23-27. The
Book Fair will be run by the PTO and held on the second floor in the First
Grade common area. It will NOT be held during your child’s library class
time. All proceeds from the fair will go towards the purchase of library
books---thank you, PTO!!! You will be receiving a detailed schedule as well
as informational materials when the date of the fair gets closer. SECOND,
the author/illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka will be visiting our school on
Tuesday April 24. He will be meeting with all grades and will discuss his
works. He has written many delightful books, including both the “Lunch
Ladies” and “Punk Farm” series. You will receive more information about this
visit, as well as information about the opportunity to buy books autographed
by Mr. Krosoczka, towards the end of March.
Thank you for finding those “lost” library books! We know it takes time to
search for them, and we do appreciate it.
