Mr. Whalen has been teaching instrumental music in Easthampton for 11 years. He is a graduate of
Westfield State College with a bachelors degree in Jazz Studies and music education, and a graduate
degree in Education. His educational experience includes teaching at Suffield Academy, Westfield
State College, Falcetti Music, Performance Music, and the Community Music school of Springfield. He
has served on the board of directors for the Massachusetts chapter of the International Association
of Jazz Educators, is a member of the Massachusetts Music Educators Association, and also worked
as a clinician specializing in jazz rhythm sections at schools across the region. Mr. Whalen was a
scholarship recipient at Jazz in July at UMASS, and named MVP at the Berklee College of Music Jazz
Festival. Mr. Whalen's main instrument is the bass, both upright and electric. His performance credits
include performances with such jazz artists as, Dr. Billy Taylor, Jim Snidero, Conrad Herwig, Steve
Davis, Yusef Lateef, and Andy Jaffe. Mr. Whalen has also served as bass player and musical director
for such acts as Souled Out, a 9 piece motown show band that played across the country, the "Stars
in Concert" music series, Bob Newhart, and is now the bass player in the Springfield MA based band
Jus Us.
