COMPUTER AND INTERNET USE AGREEMENT (AUP)
What is an Acceptable use Policy (AUP)
An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is a written agreement, signed by students and their parents or legal guardians, outlining the terms and conditions of use for the Seine River School Division Technology Network. This AUP contains several sections and you and your child should discuss each section and sign the permission form in the appropriate places. This AUP specifically sets out acceptable uses, rules of on-line behavior, and access privileges. Also covered are penalties for violations of the policy. Anyone using the School Network is required to sign this AUP, and know that it will be kept on file.
Acceptable Use Policy
Acceptable use standards in Seine River School Division apply to all students, staff, and members of the public having authorized access to the school division network.
A violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action, including, without limitation, possible reprimand, suspension or termination of access privileges to the Seine River School Division technology network. All violations of this policy will be reviewed by Seine River School Division Administrative Personnel.
Acceptable Use Policies are:
(1) The School Division’s local and wide area networks are intended only for educational purposes and the business and administrative functions directly in support of the school division’s operation.
(2) Network services, and access to these services, shall only be used by authorized persons. Where password-protected accounts are used, network users are personally responsible for all activity that occurs within their account.
(3) When interacting with other users on the division-wide network or Internet, users are expected to behave as they would in any other environment where they represent their school. It is important that users conduct themselves in a respectful and honest manner in accordance with Seine River School Division Statement of Values.
(4) Using the School Division’s networks and the Internet for illegal, obscene, harassing or inappropriate purposes, or in support of such activities, is prohibited and will be pursued by the school and divisional administration in accordance with this AUP.
(5) The School Division’s networks are shared resources and must be used in moderation. From time to time, users may be asked to limit or relinquish access to high priority processes.
(6) Users are advised that computer systems are School Division property and may be inspected or monitored at any time or if misuse is suspected.
(7) All above rules apply whether the School Division’s network access is gained from in or out of school settings.
(8) Inappropriate use of network services includes, but is not limited to, the following:
(a) Users may not use the School Division’s networks or computing equipment to:
- transmit any materials in violation of Canadian laws
- duplicate, store, or transmit pornographic materials
- transmit or post threatening, abusive, obscene or harassing material
- duplicate, store, or transmit copyrighted material that violates copyright law
- Participate in pyramid schemes, chain mail harassment or spamming.
(b) Users may not violate, or attempt to violate, the security of the School Division’s computers, data or network equipment or services.
- Any attempts at unauthorized access of School Division data will result in suspension of the user's computer and network privileges.
- Any attempt to vandalize School Division network accounts or systems will result in suspension of the user's computer and network privileges. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy data of another member, the School Division, or any of the agencies or other networks that are connected to the Internet. This includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses.
- Use of another individual's password-protected account is prohibited.
- Any user identified as a security risk or having a history of problems with other computer systems may be denied access to the School Division’s networks and services.
(c) Users may not:
- use abusive, vulgar, profane, obscene, harassing, or other inappropriate language;
- Post personal or School Division data including electronic mail on public forums (e.g., list serves, newsgroups, discussion groups).
- Share password(s) with others;
- Distribute or use anyone else's account name and password;
- Publish any individual’s personal information, or picture on the School Division or School web page without consent from that person or their legal guardian.
- Use network access for business purposes.
- Install software or network devices of any kind including personal laptops or network devices without authorization from the Manager of Information Technology.
- Make configuration changes to workstations, laptops, and software or network devices.
- Play internet games, participate on internet chat sites.
(9) Students may have email access only under their teacher’s direct supervision using an email account approved by the School Division.
Privacy Policy
To maintain system integrity, monitor network etiquette, and ensure responsible network use, Information Technology System Administrators may, under the direction and supervision of the Manager of Information Technology periodically reviews user files and communications. Users should not expect that files and other information communicated or stored on division servers would always be private.
