What forms of parent-teacher communication are available?

Please check your child's BLUE folder each night for daily information or
check this website (especially Announcements and Calendar) for more
information. You may jot a note in the folder or call if needed or email me
to get in touch. I will make every effort to respond in a timely manner.

How is homework handled in Second Grade?

Each week's homework packet will come home (in red folder) on Monday and be
due back on
Friday. Please be sure to work with your child to complete the work
throughout the week (not all on the last night). The homework is usually a
review of the past week's lessons. We may have occasionally have mini-
projects that require parental assistance. There is a daily requirement for
reading that your child will log on their Reading Log and return
each Friday. Spelling words are assigned on Monday and tested on Friday;
children may have different spelling lists.

What opportunities for creative writing are available to students?

Students write in their journals most days. Topics vary and include family
life, personal narratives, feedback on stories read in class, favorite
things, etc. Periodically we have a Free Write time where the students can write about things they are interested in.

How is discipline handled?

Carroll Lutheran uses the CHRIST program to help students remember to conduct
themselves as Christians (outlined in your handbook). I use a variety of
individual, team, and class incentives to help all children stay focused and
be successful each day. In addition, we have a card turning system. Children who are talking excessively, or off task may receive a warning. After three warnings from myself or another teacher, the student will "turn their card". They will flip their cards to the next color on their chart. A yellow receives no card punch the next day, and is a reminder to make good choices the rest of the day. A blue card means 5 minutes of recess time are lost. A red card means a note home, or a visit to the principal depending upon the issue for the card turn. All students on green receive a card punch the next day. When the cards are punched in full they may be handed in for a reward.

What is allowed for Birthday celebrations?

We encourage your child to celebrate their special day with their class. You
may bring in a special snack for the morning snack time (e.g., muffins,
cupcakes, cookies, fruit snack, popsicles)-- no whole cakes please. Your
family may choose to celebrate by donating a special book to the CLS
Library; the child or parent may read the book to our class.
