What forms of parent-teacher communication are available?

Your child's red folder which will come home every day will
contain any announcements or notes I need to pass on to you. You
may communicate with me the same way. Of course, you may also
email me with concerns. I will try to respond promptly.

How is homework handled in second grade?

The blue homework folder will come home on Monday with the week's
assignments. It may have review sheets to be completed, study
guides to help your child prepare for tests, spelling words and
Bible memory passages to work on at home, and reading requirements
for the week. Included in the folder will be a reading log on
which your child needs to record the reading he/she did that
evening. All homework is due back in school on Friday with the
exception of spelling. Written spelling work must be returned on
Wednesday so that I can check it and be certain that the student
is ready for the test on Friday.

What opportunities for creative writing are available to students?

The second-grade writing and grammar curriculum introduces the
children to proper sentence and paragraph construction. Many
opportunities are given throughout the year for the students to
express their thoughts and ideas on paper. In addition, every
week the second-graders will write a journal entry to answer
a particular question. Corrected and illustrated entries will
be compiled at the end of the year into a booklet.

How is discipline handled?

Students at Carroll Lutheran are encouraged to display Christlike
characteristics. At the beginning of the year in second grade
I establish rules and expectations with the understanding
that obeying the rules and striving to meet the expectations will
provide an environment of success in learning and honoring God.
When students show good character/citizenship traits, I am quick
to encourage them with positive comments. We use a green/yellow/
red card system to show visually how each child is conducting
him/herself during the day. Every day the child takes home a
calendar on which he/she has colored the day of the week to
indicate his/her behavior. If a child's behavior becomes
unsatisfactory, I will always notify the parents of the
problem.

What is allowed for birthday celebrations?

We will celebrate birthdays and half-birthdays by singing and
letting the student know we recognize his/her special day.
Parents may send in treats for the birthday child to share with
his/her classmates either at snack time or at lunch.

How should we handle birthday invitations at school?

Our school policy is that all invitations must be sent through
the mail rather than given out at school.
