Mrs. Rost joined Carroll Lutheran School in 2001, having previously taught at
Ryan Private School in Virginia. She has substituted in Carroll and Baltimore
Counties. Joyce enjoys cross-stitch, puzzles, music, and reading. She
attends Immanuel Lutheran Church in Manchester where she is involved in
several areas including playing in the hand chime choir. Joyce lives in
Hampstead with her husband Richard, and their dog, Emma. She and her husband
have 2 grown children. Their son, Peter, and their daughter, Sarah, are both
teachers!
I have a few sayings in 3rd grade that I like to discourage children from
using. It's not that they are 'wrong', I just feel there are some better ways
to communicate! Here are a few:
"I can't." --- I tell the children that "I can't" stands for I
Certainly Am Not Trying. While they may have
difficulty with a certain task, saying "I can't" is a less positive approach
to a task than saying "I will give it my best!"
"I don't get it."--- While I encourage children to ask questions, by
discouraging this statement I am encouraging them to think specifically what
it is they don't understand in order to ask a more specific question.
These are all less general and give me more information about where help is
needed.
I don't know what the next step is.
