*If you are curious about the picture, that is me holding a fish I caught on
the Oregon II. During the spring and summer of 2002, I took two
seperate journeys aboard the Oregon II as a Teacher At Sea for the
National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administrations (NOAA). My
job was to work side by side with the scientists and crew of the vessel to
learn about the work they do.
My first trip focused on coral reef fish. We went all through the Gulf of
Mexico dropping and pulling back up 500 pound camera arrays. These
cameras recorded the fish on the reefs. Each year they drop the
cameras in the same location to track fish populations and reef damage
in the deep parts of the Gulf of Mexico.
The second trip focused more on shallow water fish. We would trawl
many times a day to count fish. Again we followed a pattern from
previous years and would catch many, many fish. Our job was to then
identify and count the fish. We also had to determine if they were boy
fish or girl fish. They actually look quite simliar in most species, so that
was challenging.
