Announcements

TRIMESTERLY READING ASSESSMENTS are on the way!

Assessment Dates:

A-Block: 11/16
B & C Blocks: 11/17
D & E Blocks: 11/18

SKILLS AND CONTENT COVERED ON THE ASSESSMENT:
When you see the list of skills/content being covered, I think you'll agree
that students KNOW and CAN DO a lot in these areas. That said, if students
have the ability to brush up on these skills over the weekend, that would
certainly reinforce what we've been doing in the classroom.

Grade 6:
Using context to determine the meaning of unknown words
Finding and supporting the Main Idea
 Making and supporting Predictions
 Making Inferences
Word Choice: how certain words and phrases build tone, mood, and style
 Summarizing
Text Features of Nonfiction: What they are and how they provide extra
meaning
 Fact versus Opinion
 Text Patterns of Nonfiction

Grade 7:
Using context to determine the meaning of unknown words
Finding and supporting the Main Idea
 Making and supporting Predictions
 Making Inferences
Word Choice: how certain words and phrases build tone, mood, and style
 Paraphrasing versus Summarizing
Text Features of Nonfiction: What they are and how they provide extra
meaning
 Fact versus Opinion
 Text Patterns of Nonfiction
 Primary versus Secondary Sources

Old stuff:

Dear Parents and Students,

Due to some scheduling issues and some miscommunication, 6th grade reading
teachers need to give the quarterly(trimesterly) assessment for reading this
coming week.

I apologize for the late notice, but I was contending to have a later date
and was unfortunately not able to delay the test.

The good news is this: our students should be ready. When you see the list of
skills/content being covered, I think you'll agree that students have
improved markedly in these areas. That said, if students have the ability to
brush up on these skills over the weekend, that would certainly reinforce
what we've been doing in the classroom.

Schedule of Assessments:

Monday 11/23: D, E, and C blocks
Tuesday 11/24: A Block

Skills Assessed:

Using context to determine the meaning of words
 Indentifying Main Idea
 Paraphrasing
 Identify stated AND implied information
 Text Features
 Text Patterns
 Conflict/Problem/Plot
 Characterization
 Point of View
 Mood & Tone

Again, my apologies for the late notice. We have worked on these areas in
class since day one. I'm confident that we will perform well.
