STEM opportunity - 2012 Kavli Science video contest The Kavli Foundation is challenging Grades 6-12 students across the world to brainstorm and share their ideas. Students worlwide are invited to submit entries to the 2012 video contest, with cash awards and prizes for the top entries. The best video will be shown at the Festival Expo during April 27-29, 2012, where hundreds of thousands of science fans are expected to gather in Washington D.C. Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS) Program JSHS is designed to challenge and engage students (Grades 9-12) in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. Along with in-depth exposure to life as a college student and UMBC as an institution, the students participate in an engineering or IT design competition and interact with current UMBC students involved in the CWIT Scholars Program, including staying overnight in a residence hall on campus and attending a college class with one of the CWIT students. Naturalists will assist Conservancy staff during field trips by leading nature oriented hikes on the Conservancy's 232-acre historic farm property. Spring field trips are offered during April and May, and naturalists are asked to lead a minimum of three hikes. Training takes place Thursdays in March for the elementary program and Tuesdays for the secondary program. Training runs from 9:30 AM-12:30 PM; participants will receive a manual and learn ecological concepts as well as the history, plant life and wildlife of Howard County. The cost for materials is $10. Students learn about solar eclipses, sunspots, solar flares, and solar storms through a series of activities, games, and lessons.
Solar Week is ideal for students studying the solar system, the stars, or astronomy in general, and now we feature a day on solar energy. It's also for kids wondering what it's like being a scientist, and pondering possible career choices. participation makes for a fun computer lab activity as well. After doing the activities, students can interact on the bulletin board with leading scientist at the forefront of Sun-Earth research. it's a great place for any student interested in our nearest star, the Sun!
