Who can join the PTSA?
Anyone is allowed to join the PTSA. Parents, students, staff and community
members are encouraged to join. Business interested in helping Glenelg are
also encouraged to join.
--------------------------------------
How do I join the PTSA?
You can join by either filling out the membership form you received in your
summer information packet, or by contacting a member of the GHS PTSA
Executive Board. Membership forms are also available in the front office of
the school.
--------------------------------------
What does the PTSA do for GHS?
The function of the GHS PTSA is to work in conjunction with the
administration, staff, students, parents and outside educational organization
to create an environment that is safe and conducive for optimal learning for
all GHS students. In addition to implementing and monitoring educational
programs, we publish the school’s newsletter, provide scholarships for
seniors and speaker series for the community. We also provide volunteers and
food for school wide events and host a variety of events to show the staff we
appreciate their work. Finally, we work as a conduit for communication
between the community and the school.
--------------------------------------
What is the Boosters Club?
The function of the Boosters Club is to provide fund raising opportunities
for the school. These funds are used to support the entire school. All funds
raised are evenly divided between academics and athletics. We encourage you
to attend and support all their fund raising events. The money raised helps
support everyone at GHS.
--------------------------------------
How can I get involved?
You can join the PTSA and Boosters, your membership dues help support the
programs we provide. Volunteer to help. Your presents at school and events
shows your child that you value education and community services. Join the
listserv and eschoolnewsletter.com, both are a great way to stay informed
with what is happening at GHS. Finally, meet and stay in contact your child’s
teachers and guidance counselors. The best way to find out how your child is
progressing is to create a connection between you and them. By working
together, you can help your child succeed.
--------------------------------------
What if I have an problem I need help with?
The PTSA works to ensure the safety and leaning potential of all GHS
students. If you have a concern that you feel the PTSA can help with let us
know. You can contact any member of the Executive Board at any time. If you
would like to speak at a meeting or have an issue added to our agenda, please
contact Johnnie Nussbaum at 410-489-2548 or jnussb9427@aol.com. The PTSA can
not address individual grading, scheduling or staff issues. Issues that are
personal in nature should be directed to the administration.
--------------------------------------
What is a Business Partnership and how do you become a partner?
Business Partnerships are a vital in helping to promote quality education in
Howard County. They support educational programs at GHS by providing
mentorships, funds and goods for the benefit of the entire school.
If you are interested in becoming a partner you can either contact our
school’s representative, Johnnie Nussbaum or the HCPSS Business Partnership
coordinator Mary Schiller. Mary’s contact information is
mary_schiller@hcpss.org or 410-313-6661.

What is the After Prom Party?
The After Prom Party is a safe place for GHS students and their guests to
celebrate . This drug and alcohol free party is held the right after the
prom and is well supervised. The night is filled with music, games, prizes,
food and friends.
We provide this party for two very important reasons. We want our students to
be safe and we want them to have fun. Statistically, the chances that a
child between the ages of 16-21 will be involved in a fatal accident increase
by 110% on Prom night. Additionally, statistics show that because of popular
cultural, and what it dictates as the expectation of what should happen on
Prom night, 90% of teens engage in dangerous activities that they would
normally avoid. This shows that the pressure to “party” on Prom night is
heavy. The After Prom party removes that pressure. As parents, we love our
children and we need to protect them. As a PTSA and a school every child is a
invaluable member of our community. We don’t want any of them to become a
statistic.

What is the Gladiator Guild Program?
The Gladiator Guild program is a donation program that allows business to
make a direct cash donation to the school. These funds are used to sponsor
speaker series, out-reach programs and educational programs.
This year, in an attempt to improve communication between students, staff and
parents we are sponsoring a teachers web program. This program will allow
teachers to post homework, assessments, projects and grades on the web.
(grades are password protected) Parents and students can stay on top of
assessments, email the teachers and review their grades on line. Because this
program is new, it is voluntary for the staff. Your child’s teacher will let
you know if they are using the program.
--------------------------------------
What is the Respect and Compassion initiative?
The Respect and Compassion initiative is a program that the school and the
PTSA are piloting this year to enhance the school’s environment by focusing
on positive communication. This program is inline and based on the policies
of the Glenelg Honor Code, the Howard County Public School Systems Student
Code of Conduct and proposed Civility Policy and in response to our School
Improvement Team’s goals.
The basic concept is to underscore the importance of respect, honesty and
civility among students, parents and GHS staff members. Many of us, including
our children and staff members, are working over time to meet the demands
placed on us as we endeavor to be successful. In doing so, it is easy for us
to forget the personal satisfaction we feel for a job well done or the
helpfulness of positive, constructive conversations. As a school, we believe
that it is important that we work together, as a cohesive group, to encourage
positive communication between all members of our community.
