No. JROTC is simply a leadership course. We use military styles
of
leadership and training to motivate and encourage young people to
be better
leaders.
Yes. As long as you are an in-district Howard High student you
may take it
as many or as few years as you desire. However, if you have been
accepted
into
Howard HS as an out-of-district student for the purpose of taking
JROTC then
you must take JROTC in order to remain at Howard HS.
During school year 2009-2010 our enrollment is approximately 117
cadets. The
JROTC program is called a Battalion and each class is referred to
as a
company. We have 4 companies which range from 21 to 27 cadets in
size.
Each student will be issued a complete uniform. The uniform is
free but
must be returned upon completion of the course. Students are
required to
wear uniforms to school one day a week.
JROTC is not just for students planning to enter the military.
The majority
of JROTC students never even enter the military. The course does
provide a
lot of useful information about the military forces but the real
benefit of
taking this elective in high school is to learn leadership,
teamwork,
citizenship, and communication skills.
Not at all. The after-school JROTC extracurricular activities
and teams are
completely voluntary. A student can successfully pass the course
with
minimal participation in after school activities. Of course,
those students
that do participate in extracurricular JROTC events typically get
more
practice in teamwork, leadership, and confidence building and
consequently
will get more out of the total JROTC experience.
