NewsFlash

This year our cadets are selling cookie dough and magazines. We would like everyone to try and sell at least fifteen items. We would like to raise at least $3,000 for battalion trips and activites. If you can not buy cookie dough or a magazine, we have discount books for Howard County and a wonderful online store that offers a variety of gifts and magazines to choose from. If you would like to order from the online store please go to http://store.gafundraising.com then enter the cadets name who you are buying from and enter the store ID number 502443. All sales are due 10 NOV 09 for periods one through 4A, and 11 NOV 09 for 4B.  Please make checks payable to HHS JROTC and include the address and phone number of the customer and the name of the cadet.  This is a wonderful opportunity to raise money for the Lions Battalion, we love all your support of the cadets and the JROTC mission!

On 06 NOV 09 we will have an all teams practice from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.. This is for all cadets who will be on a Drill Team. We need to finish preparing for the Howard County Drill Competition.  We would really appreciate your help in facilitating transportation for your cadet as needed.

Every year, the Howard High School JROTC Lions Battalion finds a way to serve the local community.  This year the Battalion will provide weekly assistance to the local Howard County Food Bank.  The Howard County Food Bank provides food for families and individuals who are in need.  We will be going to the local Food Bank on Tuesday’s from 2:20 to 4:00 p.m. (excluding 17 NOV 09 due to competition practices) to help the food bank employees receive food shipments and stock and organize their warehouse.   This service learning activity will greatly benefit the community and the personnel who work at the Food Bank while providing a valuable way for cadets to give back to the community and make a difference.   More details can be found on Handouts page in the Food Bank document.

This year we will be attending a first year cadet orientation training encampment, hosted by Parkdale HS at Camp Schmidt. We will depart right after school on 13 Nov 09 and return on 15 Nov 09.  The cost is $60. This camp is very enriching for our first year cadets. This camp provides demanding training in proper uniform maintenance, hair grooming standards, respect for self, authority and others, behavioral management, and leadership preparation.  At the end of the weekend there will be a graduation ceremony where the cadets are rewarded for their accomplishments. The graduation ceremony is 3:00 p.m. on 15 Nov 09.  The students received permission slips in class along with the entire packet for the trip and they are available on this website under handouts.  We really hope you can include this in your calendar because it will be an experience to remember.

I would like to congratulate Cadet/LTC Andrew Rotolo who is our Battalion King and Cadet/CPT Kelli Joubert who is our Battalion Queen for School Year 2009/2010.  In December at the Military Ball they will compete for the title of Howard County JROTC Military Ball King and Queen.

On Wednesday, 30 Sep 09 we will hold our first "All Teams" practice.   This weekly practice is the afternoon when all of our drill teams come together for a joint practice.  It's a good way for cadets to learn and become proficient in all the techniques for different drill teams.  Practice begins in the JROTC classroom promptly on Wednesday's at 2:20 p.m. and concludes at 5:00 pm.  A permission slip for the entire year can be found on the handouts page.  This permission slip is also available for pick-up in the classroom.  Note - Once your cadets signs for a specific team they will be required to attend additional practices to include attendance at the Wednesday "All Teams" practice.  When conflicts arise just ensure that it is coordinated in advance with the JROTC Instructors or the Cadet officer in charge of the Team.  Although we strive for 100% participation we realize that many cadets are involved in multiple activities.  Thanks for your assistance we look forward to a great competition year for our drill teams!

National Honor Society (NHS) will be available for tutoring every Wed. from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. in the media center. This will begin Wed. Sept. 23. NHS students will be available to help their peers study for a test, work on homework, practice and review challenging material and prepare for a class. Announcements will be made and signs will be posted throughout the school. I encourage all of our students to take advantage of this free tutoring service.

Do you have your very own JROTC T-shirt?  For the first time in over 7 years the battalion has an official T-Shirt. The shirts are made out of a moisture wicking heat management style fabric with a multi-colored design on black fabric. We have one t-shirt available for each cadet at cost which is $10.00. Cadets may also buy an additional shirt for themselves or for parents and relatives for $15.00 each. T-shirt sales have gone so well that the only sizes available are XS, S, & M.  We will be putting together an order soon.
