Latin I - October 13th and 15th:
Latin I – Stage 3  -  October 10th:  

                 OBJECTIVES:  
   • Students will translate, complete practice exercises from the workbook,
and take a test on Stage 3 in order to . . .
     o	Demonstrate understanding of Pompeian life and business,
     o	Recognize nouns in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension,
     o	Decipher sentences in Latin, writing them in good English sentences,
     o	Identify subjects, verbs, and direct objects.  
  
Warm-Up:  Copy and translate the following sentences:
1. Dominus cibum gustat.
2. Senex in foro ambulat.
3. servus ad hortum venit.
4. Clemens cibum ad Caecilium portat.

                        A G E N D A   (Monday)
1. From the Workbooks, complete:

  	• Page 19 – Section 3.1: Write the English adjective and write the      
Latin word for each adjective next to it.  
Example:  angry – iratus

  	• Page 20 – Section 3.3: Write the English word; write the Latin word that
is connected to it; write the connection.  
Example:  stationary – stat – standing still; 
                maternal – mater – motherly

  	• Page 21 – Section 3.5: Write the names of the 3 characters.  Beside each
or under each, write the Latin words (with meanings) that are connected to
each character.

Page 22 – Section 3.6: Complete the even numbers only.  Write only the answer.  

Page 23 – Section 3.7: Match the 8 places to the 8 descriptions.  Write the 8
letters only, in two columns.


2. Take the Stage 3 Test as a group.  One person in the group writes the
answers.  Place names of all group members on the answer sheet.

WARM-UP:  Copy and identify the subject, verb, and direct object (if there is
one) in each sentence.

Activities:

1. Take an Inventory of what students already know about the Roman Forum.

2. Read pages 62-66 on the Roman Forum.  (Independently)

3. Read the 15 Model Sentences on pages 52-56.  Students will repeat. 
Students will decipher meanings for all sentences.

4. Watch a movie about Pompeii or Rome while I meet with students about
missing assignments.  –or-   Correct Stage 3 tests, if all students have taken
the test while I meet with students about missing assignments.

Latin I – October 6th and 8th   (Stage 3)


OBJECTIVES:  
•	Students will translate and complete practice exercises in order 
to . . .
      o	Demonstrate understanding of Pompeian life and business,
      o	Recognize nouns in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension,
      o	Decipher sentences in Latin, writing them in good English sentences,
      o	Identifying subjects, verbs, and direct objects.  

•	Students will place new vocabulary words into the correct places in 
their Latin notebooks in order to accurately identify the declensions of 
nouns and the conjugations of verbs.

•	Students will correct errors on the Stage 2 test in order to assess 
what they did incorrectly.

•	From the RULES OF OUR COMMUNITY – this week we will focus on - - -
  # 5. COOPERATE fully! Trust that the teacher is up to something 
worthwhile, and participate whether or not you understand why. 


October 6th:
  
   Warm-Up:  Glance thru pages 35-48.  Copy and answer these questions.

     1.	What do you think we will be studying in Stage 3?
     2.	What do you already know about this topic?

                 A G E N D A

     1.	Pass in homework (copy stories on pages 36 and 37, skipping every 
other line).
     
     2.	Read pages 43-48 on the Town of Pompeii.
     
     3.	Homework will be returned.  Students will underline subjects with 
one line, verbs with two lines, and direct objects with three lines.  
Prepositional phrases will be placed in parentheses.  Predicate adjectives 
will be labeled “PA” and predicate nouns will be labeled “PN.”  This will be 
completed as a class with the teacher showing the stories on the screen via 
the internet and a projector.  

     4.	Students will partner and translate page 38 (the remainder of the 
story, “tonsor”).
     
     5.	Students will independently write answers in complete sentences to 
the 8 questions on page 39.
     
     6.	Homework: Translate page 40 (venalicius) by reading and re-reading 
(not writing down).  Then write a SUMMARY of what happens in this selection.
     
     7.	Homework: Memorize meaning of words on page 50 (new vocabulary words 
for Stage 3).  

     8.	Homework: Re-read pages 43-48 on the Town of Pompeii.




October 8th:

  3. Read and follow along as we read “About the Language” on page 41 
(nominative and accusative cases – subjects and objects)  
  4. Independently complete A and C on page 42 (Practicing the Language).
         A) 1. Mercator e villa ambulat.  The merchant is walking from the 
house.  Write the sentence in Latin, choosing the correct choice from the 
two choices in parentheses.  Then translate into English. Write A-1 which I 
just typed for you as an example.  Then complete 2, 3, 4, and 5 the same 
way.  Work independently.  
         C) Amicus servum laudat.  The friend praises the servant.  Write 
the sentence in Latin, selecting one of the two choices in parentheses.  
Translate into English.  Copy C-1 which I just typed for you.  Then complete 
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.  Work independently.  
  5. Add vocabulary words from page 50 into the correct section of your 
notebook.  We will do this as a class.  If you do not have enough time, go 
to: www.teacherweb.com/MD/laurelhighschool/ALevy and go to the HANDOUTS icon 
and select “Stage 3 Vocabulary” which will be the same as what we complete 
in class.
   6. From the Workbooks, complete:
  • Page 19 – Section 3.1: Write the English adjective and write the Latin

NEXT WEEK: Review briefly vocabulary words from Stage 3, information on the 
town of Pompeii, and the characters encountered in this chapter.  Then, TEST 
on Stage 3.  





Latin I – September 30th and October 2nd 

Tuesday, September 30, 2008:

WARM-UP: Page 27, Part C (1, 2, 3)

	AGENDA
1.	Review all vocabulary words using Power Point presentation.  
Students will check to make certain that all words are in the notebooks.
2.	Menu Planning – Using a previous handout, page 15 of the workbook, 
and samples from last year, students will write an invitation to a dinner.  
Students will follow the examples on page 15 in the workbooks.  

HOMEWORK: Finish the menus.  Study for a TEST on Stage 2.

Thursday, October 2, 2008: 

WARM-UP: Page 27, Part B (8, 9)  

	AGENDA
1.	Use the Power Point Lesson to review the vocabulary again.  
2.	Collect notebooks while students test later in the class period.
3.	Re-read the cultural information for Stage 2, pages 30-32.
4.	Share and then pass in the homework (invitation to dinner).
5.	TEST on Stage 2 – independently complete 49 of the 100 questions on 
the Stage 2 test.
