General InformationGeneral Information for Middle & High School Science
What does my student need in order to do well in your class? A textbook, a 3 ring binder with 5 dividers, a pencil & pen, and a POSITIVE ATTITUDE! I do offer extra credit opportunities at various times throughout the year that are available to the entire class. I do not offer individual extra credit opportunities, as I feel it trains a student to not do his best the first time. Please encourage your child to study and prepare as though there will be only one opportunity to do well. Why do you give a daily drill? Drills are used as a way to get students settled into the classroom, as a reinforcement of the prior day's lesson, and as preparation for the upcoming test. Students are given a drill upon entering the classroom and have up to five minutes to complete the drill. Each drill counts as 1/4 of a quiz grade (they have five drills per week, but can drop the lowest drill). Students are encouraged to be on time to class, as make up drills will not be given for tardiness. If a student has multiple absences, he/she will be given an alternate assignment to make up for missed drills. Will my son/daughter have any projects this year? Biology and Life Science students will have one project/quarter (meaning four projects). Two of the projects will be internet- based activities and two will be more involved. Project assignments will be posted on my website and students will be given a hard copy. How do you address behavior issues in your classroom? Students are expected to be respectful to each other and to all classroom equipment and to come to class prepared. If a student misbehaves or is unprepared, he/she will be given a warning. If a second violation occurs, I will send home a note to or telephone his/her parents. If a third violation occurs, I will deduct five points from his/her quarter grade. Repeated violations will result in removal from the classroom. Alternate activities may be provided for students who are unable to demonstrate maturity when conducting labs. Do you allow a student to make up missed work? I do allow a student who has missed school to make up work. A time frame for make up will be determined on an individual basis. Students who are permitted to make up work will find assignments and due dates posted on my bulletin board. They will be crossed off when due date expires. I do not allow a student who has neglected to do his/her homework to make it up. |
