Plum Point Middle School
Physical Education Department: Rules, Procedures, and Expectations
Fall, 2011
Welcome to Physical Education! We are pleased to be entering into a new school year with you! While you are in physical education, you will be experiencing a variety of individual and team sports as well as leisure and lifetime activities. Meanwhile, you will learn how health and skill related fitness as well as the muscular and skeletal systems aid and enhance your body during exercise.
You will be participating in physical education for three quarters and health for one quarter.
If you do not already have a gently used uniform, free from holes, tears, or writing other than the name-bar, you will need to purchase a new uniform for $25 ($10 shirt, $15 shorts).
Combination locks will be provided by the P.E. Department. Any combination lock that is not property of the P.E. Department will be cut off. You are responsible for keeping track of your combination lock and combination! If you lose your combination lock, notify your P.E. teacher immediately so you can get a replacement lock! All combination locks MUST be returned at the end of the school year or a replacement fee will be charged (fee will be charged for all locks not returned). Remember – it is your responsibility to keep your locker locked at all times!
Expectations for Locker Use
1. Each student will be assigned his or her own lock and locker. Students cannot change lockers without permission and SHOULD NOT share a locker with another student (sanitary purposes).
2. Students will use their assigned locker to store personal belongings (street clothes, purses, wallets, jewelry, watches) during class and to store P.E. belongings during the school day. School books and bags need to be left at the entrance of the locker room and should not be brought to the locker.
3. Locker clean out days will be posted and students are expected to take uniforms home to be washed that week for sanitary purposes.
4. The P.E. staff reserves the right to access any and all P.E. lockers at any time.
Requirements for Proper Dress
1. Students are expected to be dressed in uniform every class period. Failure to be properly dressed in full uniform and tennis shoes will result in a loss of learning affective, cognitive, and psychomotor learning. Failure to dress will result in disciplinary action in accordance with the PPMS Code of Student Conduct. Students will still be expected to complete a class observation reflection based on what is being taught during the class period they are not prepared.
2. PPMS uniforms may be purchased during Physical Education class for $25.00 ($10 shirt, $15 shorts) at the beginning of the year or can be purchased from the PPMS School Store between 8 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. every morning starting in October.
3. RENTAL UNIFORMS: In the event that you forget your uniform, you may rent a uniform for a daily cost of $1 (flat fee for one or two pieces). The rental must be returned to the teacher at the end of the class period to be washed and placed back into the rental box. Renting allows students who have forgotten their uniform to participate in class activities. However, rentals are on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are no rentals available, the student will still be expected to complete a class observation reflection and will follow the PPMS Code of Student Conduct for failure to be properly dressed for class. Students cannot rent for more than three consecutive PE days.
4. For sanitary purposes, students are NOT permitted to share uniforms. This means that you cannot loan or borrow a uniform. Skin diseases and other contagious conditions may occur if a student lends or borrows a uniform.
5. PPMS P.E. uniforms may not be altered in any way (draw, write, cut, etc.). If altered, the student will be required to purchase a new uniform.
6. All students are expected to take their uniform home every other week to be washed.
7. Athletic shoes (properly laced tennis shoes, closed front and back, flat heels and soles) and socks are part of the required uniform. For safety reasons, students should not wear “shaping” shoes during PE due to the instability of the shoe design.
8. For sanitary and safety purposes, students are not permitted to wear clothing under the uniform or wear jewelry/watches to P.E. class.
9. All students are required to be fully dressed to participate unless an excused note is provided.
a) A parent note is required to be excused from participation but the student will still be expected to complete a class observation assignment.
b) A medical note is required for non-participation for longer than three consecutive days and the student involvement will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
