What is a book talk?

A book talk is where a student tells the class about a book they have read.
There is a book talk worksheet to help them organize their thoughts and
prepare for their oral presentations. Students must complete at least one
book talk per marking period. They may and are strongly encouraged to use
props in their oral presentation.
Their presentation should only last 2 - 3 minutes. Students sign up for the
talks at school.

What is parent homework (HWAP)?

The parent homework is due on Fridays. The purpose of the parent homework
is to improve student comprehension and fluency. The story is to be read
nightly and the student must read it aloud at least two nights. Parents may
read the story to the student on the first night. Studies show that
rereading familiar material helps in increasing fluency so this is a very
important exercise. Encourage your child to read with expression. Students
may also read to siblings.

How is classwork graded?

Class work is graded with a star, plus, check plus, and check. A star means
it was done correctly with 1 or 2 errors. A plus means it is well done with
some mistakes, 3-5. a check plus means it was done ok, but there were
several errors. A check means they did it, but it was incorrect.

What does a red "X" in my child's assignment book mean?

Our discipline policy in third grade is "Three strikes you're out!" If you
see a red X in your child's assignment book, they're suppose to tell you why
they got the X. If they get 3 X's in a week, you will receive a phone call
from me.
