Spelling Words

Please practice spelling and locating strategies in the words. Strategies will help you sound out words and build new words, BUT there are always exceptions to the rules! Try what you have learned first.  I will highlight the words that we will be working with each week.

Lesson 1: am, at, cat, can, ran, man, map, tap, a, the

(word families: -at,-an, -ap)

 
Lesson 2: hat, had, sad, sat, bat, bag, at, can, help, now

(word families: -ad,-ag)

 

 Lesson 3: in, pin, pig, big, dig, did, had, sat, no, too

(word families: -in, -ig)

 

 Lesson 4: pick, pack, tack, back, sack, sick, big, in, hold, so (word families: -ack, -ick) (ck at the end of the word)

 -ck: The /k/ sound at the end of a one syllable, short vowel word is usually spelled -ck. It is also used in two syllable words ending in -et and -le.
         ex: back, flick, truck, neck, clock
         ex: jacket, tickle

 Lesson 6: all, call, fall, wall, ball, tall, not, top, much, thank ( word family: -all)

Lesson 8: then, them, this, that, path, with, ten, get, said, was (diagraph "th" Diagraphs are combination of letters that make one sound.

Lesson 9:  us, bus, must, cut, cub, club, with, then, don't, says (contraction, short u)

Lesson 10: long, sing, song, ring, bring, thing, us, must, does, food  (-ng sound)

Lesson 11: or, for, form, more, store, sort, long, bring, your, head  (-or sound)

Lesson 12: shop, from, shot, shut, rush, wish, fish, for, more, very ( diagraph sh, y as a vowel=long e-2syllables)

Lesson 13: chip, chin, inch, such, catch, match, wish, shop, saw, were  ( diagraph ch,tch rule)* Diagraphs th and sh will be reviewed. ** See rule under"Phonics strategies."

Lesson 14: far, farm, arm, part, park, chin, such, fly, art, watch ( ar song!, y as a vowel= long i- 1 syllable)

Lesson 15:
quit, quick, quiz, whiz, which, when, arm, part, house, put ( qu are married, wh diagraph- When w or wh is followed by an a, the letter will make the /o/ sound.



Lesson 16: her, fur, turn, bird, girl, first, quit, when, name, work

Lesson 17: hand, handle, wig, wiggle, single, little, turn, girl, by, room ( -an family, -le strategy- 2 syllable)

Lesson 18:low, slow, grow, road, soap, boat, little, handle, carry, would ( -ow, -oa strategies, review previous strategies)

Lesson 19: me, see, feet, seat, mean, team, slow, road, our, over ( long vowel strategy)

Lesson 20:day, say, play, rain, wait, feet, me, door, plain, told ( -ay, ai strategies- ai is usually found in the middle and -ay usually at the end.)

Lesson 21:came, game, gate, late, lake, take, day, play, four, place ( lazy e rule)


Lesson 22: like, line, mine, mile, while, take, came, gone, near, nine (lazy e rule)

Lesson 23: home, hope, rope, rode, rose, those, like, nine, right, walk ( lazy e rule)

Lesson 25: use, cute, cube, tube, tune, rule,hear nice, large, talk (lazy e rule) ** Long u ca also sound like -ew or oo.

Lesson 26: my, try, tried, ties, light, might, use, rule, color, hair ( change y to i and add your ending) Using the -igh sound in words.      Drop the y and add ied"

The Rule: If a word ends in y with a consonant before it (cry), you drop the y and add -ied to make it past tense. If the y has a vowel before it (play), then you add ed.

 
Lesson 27: how, cow, down, out, found, round, try, light, earth, table ( -ou, -ow strategies- -ou is usually found in the middle, -ow is usually found at the end of a word, BUT......)

Lesson 30: find, mind, mild, cold, most, soon, new, boy, fold, building
