Theme 3: Around Town 
Selection 4: Jamaica Louise James
Talk About It: Ask your child if he or she likes surprises. Talk about 
different ways you can surprise someone you care about. If your child is 
interested, put into action some of the ideas he or she suggests. Like this 
story??? Then read City Green by DyAnne DiSalvo-Ryan or The Little Painter 
of Sabana Grande by P.M. Markun.

Theme 4: Amazing Animals
Selection 1:Officer Buckle and Gloria
Talk About It: Besides "Safety Tip #101: Always Stick with Your Buddy," what 
are some other important safety tips in Officer Buckle Gloria? Ask your 
child to name two or three. Talk about why these are good safety tips. For 
example, why is it important to look both ways before crossing the street? 
Like this story???? Then read Martha Speaks by Susan Meddaugh and Buddy: The 
First Seeing Eye Dog by Eva Moore.

Theme 4:Amazing Animals
Selection 2: Ant
Charades: Pretend to be an army ant by marching across the room, a weaver 
ant by pretending to sew, or a leafcutter ant by holding a piece of paper 
over your head. Have your child guess which ant you are pretending to be. 
When your child guesses correctly, have him or her pretend to be one of 
these ants while you guess. Like this story??? Then read Chameleon by 
Rebecca Stefoff or Biggest, Strongest, Fastest by Steve Jenkins.

Theme 4: Amazing Animals
Selection 3: The Great Ball Game and A Muskogee Story
Talk About It: Ask your child how he or she feels about reading fables and 
to explain why. Discuss any favorite fables your child might have. What 
characters would he or she put in a fable? Like this story???? Then read The 
Lizard and the Sun by Alma Flor Ada or A Snake Mistake by Mavis Smith.
