The Great Egg Challenge

The Howard County Times has just published an article
on this event. Please check it out.  10/29/09

It was such a wonderful project.  A big thank you to Mrs. Fawcett for bringing it
to the second grade.  The chaotic, energetic, creative design work that went into
each of the constructions was so impressive.  The kids were fully engaged.  They
were very excited.  And I was most impressed with how many of the projects
actually worked and protected the egg.  Thank you to everyone involved.
It was a good, good experience!

The Great Egg
    Challenge

Engineering challenges are fun activities that can test the imagination. This engineering challenge is simple. Each second grade child will become part of a team. Each team will be charged with creating a contraption that will prevent a raw egg from breaking when dropped off the roof of our school. Teams will be supplied with toothpicks, Popsicle sticks, glue, rubber bands, paper, and tape. Donations of additional supplies from home will encourage greater creativity, so please consider sending in any materials that can be shared by the students. Because we want to be ever mindful of the environment, please be sure that any materials sent in can be recycled in some way.
This challenge will begin on Monday, October 12th, from 2:45-3:45 and will continue on Tuesday, October 13th, Wednesday, October 14th, Thursday, October 15th and Tuesday, October 20th from 2:45-3:45 each of those days. On Thursday, October 22nd, from 2:45-3:45 we will have the egg drop in the front of the school. Students and staff will cheer as each contraption, complete with a whole, raw egg, will drop from the roof. Spectators will gasp, as the egg is unveiled. Please join the second grade for the egg drop on the 22nd.
We are looking for volunteers who can oversee a group on any or all of the afternoons. If you are interested in helping, please contact Elsa Fawcett at 410-313-5512 or at elsa_fawcett@hcpss.org. Thanks!
With fun and creativity in mind,
