ARMY EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM: Welcome to the Army
Educational Outreach Program (AEOP). The United States Army has
long recognized that a scientifically and technologically
literate citizenry is our nations best hope for a secure,
rewarding and successful future. For over 50 years, the
Army has supported a wide range of educational opportunities in
Science, mathematics, engineering and technology for our youth
and their teachers. Our nations economy has greatly benefited
from the technological achievements of the last century and is
destined for greater achievements throughout the 21st century.
Science, mathematics, engineering and technology will continue to
play a dominant role in all aspects of everyday life in the 21st
century. For this reason, the Army has created the AEOP, which
greatly expands and integrates an array of Army educational
opportunities for the future generations of Americas workforce
and their teachers. The AEOP is comprised of Army-sponsored
research, education, competitions, internships and practical
experiences designed to engage and guide students and teachers in
science, mathematics, engineering and technology. From
kindergarten through graduate school, students of all proficiency
levels, interests, and ethnic, economic and academic backgrounds
are encouraged to participate in real world experiences involving
these important disciplines. Programs involve interactive
activities and knowledgeable mentors to introduce students to
these areas. Events include school visits, neighborhood
activities and community science fairs. Engineers, scientists,
mathematicians and technology experts, who act as mentors and
guides, introduce students to various levels of research and
engineering and provide advice on career opportunities and
training. In AEOP, high-school students can choose from a wide
range of educational challenges such as the Junior Science and
Humanities Symposium or the International Mathematics Olympiad.
For those in grades 6-9 who prefer cyberspace, eCYBERMISSION is
an inclusive web-based science, mathematics and technology
competition with significant monetary awards for small teams of
students who are interested in open-ended challenges that are
relevant and linked to their community. GEMS, SEAP, UNITE, ISEP
and REAP provide hands-on internships to pre-college students,
each program tailored to a different age and interest. Materials
World Modules enables students and teachers from middle to high
school to experience science through the process of self-
discovery. AEOP programs are also available for college
undergraduate and graduate students that include extensive
scholarship opportunities available at numerous institutions
across the country. The Army invites parents, students and
teachers in communities across America to become familiar with
AEOP. Taking advantage of its numerous educational opportunities
available in science, mathematics, engineering and
technology will ensure that America will continue to maintain its
technological leadership in a globally competitive world. For
additional information, applications and deadlines, visit

Finding a MEDICAL INTERNSHIP

If you are interested in pursuing a career in medicine and
working in a medical setting doing support work can be a really
valuable experience. It will let you see what it is like to be a
medical practitioner. And it allows you to meet people who can
discuss and mentor your career path with you.

No matter where you work in the health profession, you will most
likely not be able to have really close interactions with
patients. This is because you have not yet completed medical
training and because of various regulations, such as those
protecting patient privacy. So be prepared for most of your work
activities to be routine tasks.

All potential mentors want to see prospective interns who show
initiative and interest. So, as much as this sounds scary- you
will need to do it… Go to the kinds of places that interest you,
and ask if s/he will sponsor you. There are thousands of them
nearby. In every field possible. Make sure you read through the
course website before you go so you will know how many hours a
week you will need to work, what the mentor will need to know,
etc. It is all in there!!

Most large organizations and institutions have websites where
they ask for volunteers. In the medical field, the term “intern”
means someone who has medical school training. So “volunteer” is
as close as you will get to being an “intern”.

Here is just a brief jump start:

1.	Hospitals, including rehabilitation centers, etc. Every
hospital and large organization has a volunteer coordinator or a
volunteer office. They will have application packages for you.
Please tell the coordinator that you are applying as a student in
the Science Internship program at Wootton High School.
a.	Shady Grove
b.	Suburban
c.	Montgomery General
d.	NIH Clinical Center
e.	Bethesda Naval Medical center (soon to be renamed Walter
Reed)
f.	Jewish Community Center
g.	Shady Grave Rehab Center
h.	Check the phone book & drive around & look at building
names- zillions of other places
i.	Not as close, but do-able: GWU, Georgetown, NOVA,
Washington Hospital Center, etc.
2.	Medical Offices (Doctors, dentists, Physical Therapists,
other Therapists, Optometrists, etc…)
a.	Doctors will want you to come with your resume in hand.
Be prepared to discuss why you chose this field.
3.	Public Health facilities:
a.	There are a lot of governmental offices that deal with
health issues. Check the web sites of local towns & cities,
counties, state and national. Many of them have listings on the
SSL site asking for volunteers.
4.	Volunteer Organizations. A zillion of them! Everything
from those that support specific diseases and conditions (ie,
Cancer Society). Again, they have websites and they ask for
volunteers.
5.	Professional Organizations and Societies: Local medical
societies. Such as the local society for Occupational Therapists.
6.	For-Profit Centers and Clinics.
