STARS Approved Clubs for the 2010-2011 School Year

This list is current as of September 22, 2010, but it is subject 
to change if additional clubs are formed before November 1, 
2010.  Any club failing to have regular meetings will receive a 
warning that the club may be removed from qualifying status.  The 
clubs listed below have historically met all of the requirements 
for STARS and I anticipate this will always remain true.
All STARS approved clubs must participate in Science March 
Madness (this does not apply to competitions).  


1.	DNAcademy
•	Spreads awareness, raises funds for a certain disease, 
holds lectures, and participates in labs
•	Meets once a month in room 288; length of meeting depends 
on activity; lectures last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour
•	Sponsored by Dr. Firoved and Mr. Forsberg

•	Student led by Aniqa Tasnim (aniqa_t@verizon.net)
•	Cannot miss more than two meetings

2.	Aeronautics
•	Discusses airplanes, outer space, etc.
•	Meets in room 209; meetings last 20-30 minutes
•	Sponsored by Ms. Shillinger (whsaeroclub@gmail.com)
•	Student led by DaFu Wan (david_wan@rocketmail.com) 
•	Wants members to be at as many meetings as possible, 
usually 2-3 per month

3.	Aero Space Engineering
•	Teaches principles of space engineering
•	Meets in Mrs. Little’s room; meetings last 30 minutes, 
typically after school on Thursdays; some out-of-school projects
•	Sponsored by Mrs. Little (Tracey_E_Seek@mcpsmd.org) 
•	Student led by Daniel Hwang (daltacs2010@gmail.com)

4.	Chemistry Club
•	Tutors in chemistry, participates in experiment 
demonstrations, and takes field trips
•	Meets every Thursday in room 286 (first meeting is 9/23)
•	Sponsored by Mr. Ayotte (Donald_G_Ayotte@mcpsmd.org)
•	Student led by Kevin Yan (woottonchemistry@gmail.com)

5.	Engineering Club
•	Teaches principles of engineering
•	Meets every Thursday (after school) in room 213
•	Sponsored by Dr. Hirsch (Lee_M_Hirsch@mcpsmd.org) 
•	Student led by Jessica Wilson (nerili8@gmail.com) 
•	Wants members to be at as many meetings as possible

6.	Forensic Science Club
•	Listens to guest speakers from the forensics field, 
explores different aspects of the forensics field, and learns to 
fingerprint and dust
•	Meets two Thursdays each month (usually the first and 
third week) in room 216; meetings last about an hour
•	Sponsored by Mr. Herzon (Sanford_M_Herzon@mcpsmd.org) 
•	Student led by Rebecca Hart and Amanda Filie 
(a.filie94@comcast.net)
•	Wants committed members; flexible with athletes

7.	Physics Club
•	Provides a tutoring service for students seeking help in 
physics and prepares for physics competitions
•	Meets on Wednesdays from 2:15-3:15
•	Sponsored by Mr. Thompson (Michael_U_Thompson@mcpsmd.org)

8.	Math Honors Society
•	Promotes math, plays games, participates in March 
Madness, and holds tutoring sessions
•	Meets one Thursday each month for 1 hour; meetings begin 
at 2:30 in Ms. Rajter’s room
•	Sponsored by Ms. Rajter (Cecilia_A_Rajter@mcpsmd.org) 
•	Student led by May Xu and Bilal Naved

•	Are only allowed two unexcused absences

9.	Future Doctors of America Club
•	Teaches students about medical procedures and 
professions, performs dissections, holds lectures about diseases, 
and listens to guest speakers
•	Meetings are held every 3-4 weeks on Wednesdays; meetings 
begin after school at 2:20 in room 285
•	Sponsored by Mr. Forsberg (James_D_Forsberg@mcpsmd.org)
•	Student led by Olivia Lu and Victor Wang 
(whsfda@gmail.com)

10.	Science National Honors Society
•	Science tutoring during all lunches, holds field trips; 
all students are required to perform 8 hours worth of tutoring 
during the school year and spend 2 hours for a specific SNHS task
•	Meetings are held monthly
•	Sponsored by Dr. Kim (Michael_T_Kim@mcpsmd.org)
•	Student led by Annie Tang
•	Are allowed 1 unexcused absence and 2 excused absences
