Journey to the New World

May 16, 1711

Dearest Mother,
We are safe on solid ground! Since leaving Germany eight months ago, our feet
have touched mostly slippery boat decks. First, a small boat took us down the
Rhine River to Rotterdam, Holland. The journey was miserable, wet, and
bitterly cold. Next, we boarded an English schooner. Our ship sailed from
Rotterdam to London, England, and then over the Atlantic Ocean to Philadelphia
in the New World.
Our voyage at sea was treacherous. Storms rocked the vessel so violently I
thought it was tipping over. During the last two weeks at sea nearly all
aboard became seasick. Father and I were fortunate and recovered once we
reached the harbor three days ago.
Yesterday, we finally got our land legs back. Our feet no longer think they
are aboard ship. Today, I am writing to you from Boar's Head Tavern. We
decided to take respite here for the day. Tomorrow, we leave for Germantown.
We are thankful that we arrived alive and that we can buy a few acres of land.
It seems like forever since we left our troubled Germany.

Your son,
Ernest
