Debate

The debate team is a interscholastic, high-level debate program at the middle
school level.
The debate team is open to all grades and all students who are serious about
learning about research, argumentation, communication, and public speaking
skills. Students compete against other middle schools in Howard County at the
two county-wide debates in the fall and the spring. A resolution is chosen
and each school is assigned a pro or con side to defend. Students prepare for
the debate by researching the resolution, preparing speeches and possible
rebuttals. It is challenging work, but a very rewarding experience that gives
students the skills they need now and in the future.

LKMS has a competitive, undefeated debate team. We have a strong group of
serious and committed students dedicated to learning all they can about a
topic and becoming effective and formidable public speakers. If you are a
serious student, like to argue and debate, are interested in public speaking
and research, the LKMS debate team is the place for you.

MEETING TIMES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Meets 4-5 times per month during various periods of the day
Ask permission from teachers to attend debate meetings
Make up all work from missed classes
Have a serious work ethic at debate meetings
Research and work on speeches at home

Please see Mrs. Spillman for the new website.

Congratulations to our debate team who won our fall debate. I am very proud of
all of you.

The spring debate's resolution: Be it resolved that Howard County should offer
single-gender classes.
