What should my student wear on days they have physical education?
Your students should be ready to be physically active. "Tennis shoes" are the best,
and please make sure that those shoes will not mark up the gymnasium floor as it
takes time and effort to clean all those marks. Loose, easy fitting clothes are
suggested for class, and if students would like to bring a change of clothes with them
they can do so.
How will my student be graded in Physical Education class?
Your student will be graded on participation, optimism, and how they treat their
classmates and their teacher. They WILL NOT be graded on how many baskets they
can make, how fast they can run, or how high they can jump. As personal goals are
set during the year, your student will be graded on how they strive to achieve those
goals (i.e. making more baskets / running faster / jumping higher)
Whatever happened to 'Gym class'?
As I tell my students on the first day of school: The word "gym" is short for two other
words in the English language. Gym can be short for "gymnastics" but we do many
more activities than just gymnastics. Also, the word gym can be used to signify where
we meet for physical education class: the gymnasium. It is physically impossible to
teach a large building how to jump, cooperate with team members, or learn
confidence and self-control!
What are the Physical Education expectations?
The purpose of physical education is to encourage students to become more physically active by
learning and understanding physical fitness concepts, participate in a variety of motor skills and to
work with others in a physical activity setting. Being prepared for physical education classes ensures
your child's comfort and encourages better participation in physical activities.
How do I sign up for the pedometer (PEC Logit) program?
Here is the way to sign up for the pedometer program that is becoming school wide.
1. Buy a pedometer!
2. Register at http://www.peclogit.org as a student from Hope Elementary School or Appleton Village
School (not Hope Staff or Appleton Staff).
3. Login and log your steps up to 6 days back. Those steps will be automatically updated on a map
to see how you far you as an individual has travelled. Those miles will also be automatically added
to the miles from other Hope Elementary students to help complete the trip around the country!
