This class is called Core Reading. What does that mean?

This class is the same as a team reading class, just smaller. The students in
my class need a little extra attention, but not a lot. There are no more than
12 students in every class so that each student can get direct instruction
during class. The reason you are in this class is that either your test
scores or your teacher (or maybe both) suggested that you need more attention
and assistance when it comes to reading, but you are very close to being on
grade level. You just need a little push.
I teach this class to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

So, what is different other than the size of the class?

Well, let's just say that I prefer a non-traditional approach to reading.
What does that mean? Well, it means this won't be like the reading class
you're used to. I try to spice it up a little with more fun and interactive
ways of reading. We might do reader's theater or act out a movie or we might
play games to test your knowledge of certain terms you have learned. I don't
like to be bored and I know you don't either, so be ready for anything!

What's with the comfy spots in the room?

Well, there are beanbags, cushions, and mats to sit in, but they are a
privilege. That means they are yours to use unless you are a) sleeping on
them, b) damaging them, or c) not doing your work/goofing off! You just need
to sign up for the day you want it (as long as you don't sign up for the same
thing 2 days in a row). Pretty simple.

What do you expect as far as behavior?

I have a simple policy. Be kind, be useful, or be quiet. Anything you say in
class (when talking to a student or a teacher) needs to fall into one of those
categories.

What are we going to read this year?

That will depend on you. I have some suggestions as far as class books, but
you will decide as a class. You will also pick an independent reading book on
your own. If you need help, I will be happy to assist or offer suggestions.
We'll talk about this in class.

Will there be homework or home reading?

I have found that, in the past, it has been too hard to keep track of home
independent reading, so I don't require it. Therefore, you will be required
to do some IN class silent reading.

Most of the assignments I give to 7th and 8th grade will be computer-based,
completed right here on this site.
