6)CELEBRACIONES PROJECT

This is a fun and productive way to learn about some of the many holidays the Hispanic people celebrate! Why study celebrations? The celebration of holidays reveals the roots of cultural heritage. Traditions passed down through celebrations provide much information about the lifestyle of the peoples. ("Gracias" to Srta. Brazier for creating this project!)

Project Focus: How do the holidays and celebrations of Spanish-speaking people reflect their cultural heritage?

1)   In a group, you will research one of the holidays listed below, and plan a celebration of that holiday in which the class will participate. As you research, make sure you discover:

* when the holiday is celebrated

* history of the celebration

* how the holiday is celebrated, including food, rituals, dress, and decorations

*is the holiday celebrated in another culture and if so, compare the celebration across cultures

*why this holiday is important to the culture

2) Your group will need to plan and implement a classroom celebration of the holiday including appropriate traditions, foods, dress, and decorations. You must prepare the class before the celebration with a five minute oral presentation on the history, culture and traditions associated with the holiday.

3) Sr. Sferes will assign your group to one of the following holidays:

el Día de los Muertos (México)

el Año Nuevo España

el Día de la Raza (Costa Rica)

la Navidad (Mexico/España)

el Carnival (la República Dominicana/Puerto Rico/Bolivia)

la Semana Santa (España)

Ephipany (Three Kings) Mexico/Espana

4)As a conluding activity, each student group will prepare an original keynote presentation on the holiday they have researched. These keynotes will be presented at the respective "fiesta!"

13)FAMILY SCRAPBOOK PROJECT

9) FAMILY SCRAPBOOK PROJECT

You are an exchange student in Mexico. You are not able to express yourself as well as you want because you don't know the vocabulary yet. You want to tell your host family about your own family and friends, but decide that it would be easier to do this by making a scrapbook of your closest family members and friends.

The scrapbook will have 10 pages inside the cover. Each page will represent a different family member or friend. Please include yourself, 7 family members, and 2 dear friends who are considered to be part of your family. These people can be your real family or an imaginary family, however they must share the same theme. For example, if you choose "Mickey Mouse" to be your father then "Minnie" should be your mother. If you choose "Homer" to be your father than "Marge" should be your mother. Each page will include a photo of that person and a few sentences describing him or her. The background will be a collage of their favorite things. The cover should be a picture of the entire family or a picture of something that represents your family such as an emblem. You can create this scrapbook with either keynote or make a hard copy of it. You can use real pictures of your familyor obtain photos from the internet. You will have a few days to work on this in class. Be creative!

16)LEARNING TARGETS PROJECT

Spanish Learning Targets Powerpoint Project

The purpose of this project is to create our own online "textbook through a series of creative, informative, and interesting powerpoints that introduce and explain each of the learning targets outlined in the BMS Spanish curriculum.

Guidelines:

(1)Students may work alone or in pairs of two.

(2) Students will be assigned one or more Learning Targets for which they they create a powerpoint that introduces and teaches that learning target. Please assume that the person viewing this powerpoint has no previous knowledge of the learning target.

3) There is no set number of frames required for each powerpoint. Err on the side of too many rather than too few. Try to keep your powerpoint simple, informative, colorful, clearly worded, and motivational!

4) The last frame(s) should be some sort of "comprehension check" to see if the viewer has grasped the concept/vocabulary you are teaching.

5) I want this to be a FUN and PRODUCTIVE use of classtime. Please stay on target; you will be given an "on-task" grade for each block that we work on this.

6) You and/or your group will be assigned a total of 2-5 learning targets, depending on the complexity of each. This project, including a "charette" (I'll explain this architectural term in class) will encompass a total of six class periods.

7) During the last two weeks of classes we will actually view each of these powerpoints as an end-of-the year review in preparation for a "So You Think You Know Spanish" challenge!
