WebQuests

Description

What is a WebQuest?

Simply put, WebQuests are really good lesson plans or curriculum units that
integrate resources from the Internet. WebQuests guide students to build
knowledge and think at a higher level. WebQuests ask great questions and
provide reliable resources that get students excitedto learn more. They
provide opportunities for students to actively apply their knowledge through
hands-on learning and collaborative activities. They also push students to
continuously reflect on what they have learned. In this way, learners begin
to build their own knowledge by combining what they already know with new
ideas, events, and activities with which they come in contact.

(Special thanks to Matthew Durant, a teacher in the Brookline, Massachusetts
school system for supplying the key information in the above paragraph.)

Here is a superb WebQuest designed to show how the study of a culture's
background can aid the secondary language acquisition process. This lesson
was specifically developed for 7th and 8th grade Spanish classes. At the
culmination of this quest, students should be able to differentiate between
the two cultures as they develop arguments for which is the most important
contribution of these two ancient groups to our modern society.
WebQuest #1: AZTEC and MAYAN Cultures: What Have They Done for Us Lately?

Biddeford Middle School has just received a $1,000,000. grant to send an
entire Spanish class to a Spanish-speaking country for a month. In order to
choose what country the class will visit, Sr. Sferes suggests that each
student in the class visit a different Spanish-speaking country and then
report back with an informational keynote presentation on the country
that he/she visited. After each student has presented his/her country, the
class will then decide on what country they will visit. (NOTE: THE WEBQUEST
STATES THE STUDENT WILL CREATE A BROCHURE; INSTEAD I AM ASKING EACH STUDENT
TO CREATE A KEYNOTE!!!!)
WebQuest #2: THE SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES: What is it like to live in...?

You work for "Tiger Drive Advertising and Public Relations" on Madison
Avenue in New York City. Your firm has just been awarded a $3,000,000.

dynamic travel brochures that showcase each country and seeks to make each
country a must-see tourist destination. As an employee of "Tiger Drive,"
your challenge is to use your imagination and creativity to sell your
assigned country as a world class vacation spot. Brochures need to be made
for the following 17 Latin American countries: Honduras, Argentina, Mexico,
Bolivia, Uruguay, Republica Dominicana, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Venezuela,
Peru, Paraguay, Panama, El Salvador, Ecuador, Chile, Costa Rica, and Cuba.
Your team will receive $100,000. for this assignment. The team creating the

of "chocolates!"
WebQuest #3: LATIN AMERICAN TRAVEL BROCHURE

You and your team of hotshot detectives have been asked to investigate the
crowd of people gathering in a local cemetery. The town's mayor is afraid
of some skullduggery, but you can put your mind to rest-it's just a
celebration of El Dia de los Muertos! But what exactly is this "Day of the
Dead" all about? When does it take place? And why? This web quest will
require you to create a
keynote presentation to present to the townsfolk what is going on...
WebQuest #4: El DÍA de Los Muertos: KEYNOTE WEBQUEST

Bullfighting is an integral part of Hispanic culture, but it is often very
misunderstood in the United States. Many people attack it as cruel, while
others defend it as a tradition or art. This is your chance to search the web
and draw your own conclusions as you investigate THE BULLFIGHT. The purpose of
this activity is to introduce you to the art of bullfighting and to help you
form your own opinion of its value and morality.
WebQuest #5: BULLFIGHTING: TRADITION AND ART
