IMPORTANT DATES/INFORMATION

Valentine's Day - students are welcome to bring in Valentines for their classmates.  Each student was given a class list.

Grade 3 - 5 Assembly - Friday, Feb. 17.  Several students from our class will join students from the classes of Westra and Wheeler to present entries from their immigrant journals.

The following is a snapshot of what's happening in our class:

EVERYDAY MATH - Unit 5:  Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
  • Mixed numbers
  • Comparing and ordering fractions
  • Equivalent fractions
  • Renaming fractions as decimals and percents
Students should be practicing math facts using ALEKs at home.   In-class facts quizzes are every Friday. 

READING 
  • Students' continue to work on their reading goal of reading 25 books by the end of the year.  They should be reading a minimum of 100 minutes per week.
  • We are finishing up our class novel, Letters from Rifka, as a tie in with the immigration unit.  Students have been responding to questions using the Better Answers formula and working with vocabulary words in the novel.  The story elements we've focused on are foreshadowing, metaphor, and simile

WRITING
Students are listening to examples of personal narrative and discussing the elements of great narratives.  We are brainstorming possible topics and generating rough drafts.

SPELLING/VOCABULARY - 
  • Lesson #27 from Spelling for Writers- Plurals of words ending in "y"
  • Wordly Wise vocabulary - Lesson 3 (week of 2/13)

SOCIAL STUDIES
  • Students made their journals and are finishing their journal entries and adding pictures.
  • We will discuss the present day requirements to become a U.S. citizen prior to the Naturalization Ceremony on March 2nd.
SCIENCE
Students began the Energy Unit with Mrs. Stiles.  They will have science 3 days a week through February vacation.  Students learn how energy is all around us, the transfer of energy, and the variety of forms energy takes in our world.
