This page provides a general idea of the sixth grade curriculum.
Sixth graders make the transition from Everyday Mathematics to Connected
Mathematics Project (CMP). CMP focuses on hands-on learning within thematic
units. We will start with “Prime Time,” a unit on factors and multiples.
Each unit is broken into “Investigations” which are designed to challenge your
child with problem solving opportunities. Built-in applications and review
follow each Investigation. These are called ACE (Applications, Connections,
Extensions) questions, and will be frequently assigned for homework. These
generally require problem solving strategies as well. We will be
incorporating Aleks, a diagnostic internet-based math program which will allow
for weekly review and practice.
In Social Studies, we will start with studying slavery, the Civil War and
Reconstruction and move forward to 20th century themes and events. We also
spend time studying current events, and each student is expected to prepare a
report and presentation monthly. Much of our work in Social Studies will be
project-based, and technology is highly integrated.
Grades K-6 at Hope Elementary School use the Houghton Mifflin reading program.
This standards-based program includes an anthology of literature and built in
spelling, grammar, and writing components. Your child is also required to
independently read a minimum of five books per quarter of required genres and
write book reviews on them. Independent reading is expected to be done at
home.
