Hope for the future

Welcome to second grade!  I am looking forward to an exciting year with your child!  As some of you know, this is my third year teaching second grade at HES.  Previously, I taught Reading Recovery here for fifteen years, and before that I taught kindergarten and first grade.  I am excited to work with your child and I look forward to meeting each of you!
During these early weeks of school, we will be spending time building our classroom community.  I believe it is important for all children to feel safe and comfortable in their working environment.  Together we will review school rules and create our classroom rules.

Nightly Reading
An ongoing homework assignment is to read 15 to 20 minutes each night.  Children need an audience for their reading and this should be a fun time for both children and parents.  I suggest that a child read at least a portion of the material, but it is equally satisfactory for the adult to read selections to the child.  Modeled reading is important for the development of reading.  I am asking your child to record his/her progress on the reading log which can be found in the reading bag.  These bags should go back and forth between school and home each school day.  They will begin to come home next week.
With Fall comes caterpillars!  We began our study of butterflies this week.  Thank you to Owen, Max and Anna G. for bringing in caterpillars.  It is so exciting to have the chance to watch them grow and change!
Again, I would like to say how excited I am to have the opportunity to teach your child.
