Hello parents!
We have started our WWII unit and we have our annual WWII Day this Friday.
Students are required to either bring in an artifact from WWII or a food item
from a WWII recipe. You can find many easy choices if you google "WWII
recipes". Students may dress up, but it is not required. We cannot be
responsible for valuable items, so please consider this when choosing
artifacts. Also, no weapons of any kind! Thanks very much.
The following is a schedule for the day. You are more than welcome to
come in!
3 stations: Veteran panel of speakers, WWII cartoons and advertisements,
and WWII Museum artifact shares
8:30-9:15 Rotation 1
9:25-10:10 Rotation 2
10:15-11:00 Rotation 3
11:00-11:30 LUNCH... Maryann Nudd will be making a delicious meal...
chipped beef and mayonnaise cake.
12:30-1:30 USO show... come in and see our team talent as we perform
acts from the period in our annual USO show.
**If any of you know a veteran from WWII, or even someone alive during
the time that could talk about the home front, that wants to be on our panel
this Friday, please contact me. This is a fun and educational day!
Finally, our team will be going to the WWII Museum in Wolfboro, NH on
Tuesday, March 27. The cost will be $5.00 and we will send a slip home
tomorrow.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi Parents,
This is just an email checking in and to let you know of our new unit.
First, we would like to thank you for supporting us with our holiday service
projects. We visited many shut ins, delivered baskets, and provided toys,
gifts, and cookies to needy people in our own communities. Check our website
to see pictures!
We have started our Roaring Twenties unit. There are two parts to this
unit. In the first part, students are placed in to groups and will research a
topic of the 1920s and create an entertaining and informative presentation to
be shared with the rest of the team. These presentations will take place next
week. In the second part, students work individually to buy and sell stocks
in a simulated stock market. The goal is to make as much money as possible
before it finally crashes. The enthusiasm is high, so ask your child to share
with you at home!
As a culminating activity, we will have our 1920s
Day next Friday. Students will wear roaring twenties costumes, and we will
complete our stock market simulation with our own "wealth distribution". Then
students will learn to dance (the Charleston), play some 20's fad games (gold
fish swallowing and bubble gum chewing), and share some presentations. As
always, you are welcome to join us. Details will be emailed next week.

Hello Parents,
We have several exciting opportunities and activities coming up. Here is a
quick glance...
PEASE: The other half of the eighth grade will be going to Pease this
Thursday. Students have permission slips. We plan to return to school at 3:00.
This means you must arrange for a ride or they will have to take the late bus
home. Please be flexible as this is an incoming flight coming home from
overseas and the times are very unpredictable.
CUPCAKE WARS: Next Monday (keep in mind we have no school the rest of the
week), we will host the first ever Cupcake War. Advisories will compete to
decorate cupcakes and create a display based on their favorite book. Each
advisory decides on the book and then plans their display. The cupcakes must
be baked at home and the frosting/decorating will be done in school next
Monday. You may be "volunteered" by your child to bring in some supplies.
Advisories compete for best tasting, best overall display, etc. We can say the
excitement surrounding this activity is pretty amazing. This is a "level
activity" and students who are not on level one will be making work up during
this time.
HOLIDAY CD: A few years ago, students recorded songs on garage band and then
we compiled them on iTunes and created a holiday CD that we gave out to people
as gifts. For a $5.00 donation, we decided to collect funds that we used to
sponsor families in need in our towns by buying presents and meals for them.
We will start the CD this week. Students have been signing up and we will have
our "track list" finalized before Thanksgiving break. They need to record
their own songs and hand us the final product. Students sing, burn the CDs,
create the cover design, and even sell them. It is a great service learning
project that has become an eighth grade tradition. We hope you will want a CD!
DECEMBER 11: On Sunday, December 11, we have been invited to attend a holiday
party for disabled veterans at the Bedford VA Hospital in Somerville, MA. The
idea orginated when a comment was made that these veterans would have loved to
see our assembly but were too sick to travel a long distance. So, we want to
bring it to them. More details will be coming soon and this is purely a
voluntary project since it is on Sunday. We will travel by school bus and will
perform a holiday show for them.
We have a lot going on and there are many opportunities for everyone to get
involved. Please email with questions or comments. Thanks very much!

Hi Parents,
A few items:
1. Conferences: Do not forget our first round of conferences is
tomorrow beginning at 3. We are totally booked, so please be on time. We
will not be able to accommodate late arrivals. If you still need to schedule
a conference, I have several openings for next Tuesday, the 8th. Conferences
will be held in 100 and 102.
2. We need your help. We are sponsoring the dance on Friday. Would
anyone be willing to bake some goodies to sell that evening? Please reply
if you are able to help us. It would be helpful if you could preportion the
items to be sold for 50 cents. All of the proceeds will go to the eighth
grade. THANK YOU!
3. Finally, our interns have started their solo teaching. You will
have a chance to speak with them during conferences. The kids really enjoy
them. If you are curious about social studies, Mr. D is posting his lessons
on a website. You can check out the powerpoints, assignments, and even see
pictures on the link below.

Email with questions. Thanks for everything.

Hello Parents,
A VERY busy week... here is a run down!
IMMIGRATION: Our actual simulation is on Wednesday. I have included a
schedule below. We welcome parents to come in at any point during the day.
Please sign in at the office.
8:30 Students change, line up in main hallway to enter "Ellis Island"
with their families and bundles. They will go through the various stations in
the gym and then, hopefully, obtain citizenship.
10:00 We will set up the gym with our country displays and then EAT!
11:00 Lunch
11:35 Allied Art
12:20 Presentations and the infamous immigration dance
I hope by now that you know whether your child "volunteered" to bring in
a food item. Each student needs a costume and a bundle with three items in
it. Please do not send in valuable items as we cannot be responsible for them.
The written work begins after the simulation with a "letter from home"
for language arts as well as a detailed "immigration reflection" for social
studies.
CONFERENCES:
I have replied with your date and time. So far, I have been able to
accommodate each request, however the times are now very limited for Nov. 3
(Thursday). I have many available for Nov. 8. Please respond as soon as
possible if you want a time to meet with us.
Please check our website for updated information. These kids are doing
a fantastic job with Immigration and we look forward to Wednesday. Please
email with any questions or comments.

Hi Parents,
I have two important items to tell you about. We will begin the Level System
this week for students who are either failing or in danger of failing one or
more classes. The system is described on our website, but we are also sending
home a sheet today that must be signed and returned to the advisory teacher.
Rather than explain it all here, please just read the pink paper coming home
and visit our website, then email if you have any questions. Thanks.
We are in full swing with our Immigration unit. Students have been
placed in to families and the tasks are underway. Although we have no regular
classes this week and half of next week, students should have homework. On
our website, I have listed the tasks in our homework section. Do not let them
tell you they have nothing to do! Our actual simulation is next Tuesday
(although we may move it to Wednesday). They will need costumes, items for
their "bundle", and some will need food items depending on if they
volunteered. All of these requirements will be discussed at length at school
and it is described in their packets. We even host a fashion show later this
week as examples of what to wear. I am giving you a "heads up" now so that
they do not surprise you next Monday night.
Thanks and please email with any feedback, comments, or questions.

Hi Parents!
We have some exciting events coming up and I want to pass along some
important information to you.
LIGHT the NIGHT: Next Saturday, October 1, the eighth grade will
participate in the annual Light the Night walk at York Beach to raise money
for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. This will be the thirteenth year for Team
Marshwood! Over the past years, we have raised more than $60,000! Today, we
had a meeting with our students to explain the details of the walk. We will
meet at the York Beach Ballfield (across from York's Animal Kingdom and next
to the fire station) between 5:30-5:45. The walk kicks off at 6:00. We will
walk to the Nubble Lighthouse and return to Short Sands Park. You must pick
your children up promptly at 7:30 at Short Sands parking lot. Please
understand that many of the teachers will walk and although we consider this a
very safe activity for our students, we are not directly responsible
for their supervision. We also do not promote door to door
solicitations for pledges. Finally, we ask that only students who have raised
pledges participate in the walk.
A FLIGHT to PEASE: On October 3, half of our team will travel to Pease
Air Force Base to greet troops in a "send off" as they are being deployed to
Afghanistan. We will be taking periods 3 and 5 math classes. On the next
flight to be determined, we will bring the second half of our team. This
flight is supposed to land at 11:30, so we will depart at 9:30 from school and
return by bus dismissal. Please be patient as these flights change or are
even canceled at a moment's notice. We will be sending a permission slip home
on Monday. We believe this is a powerful experience for our students and we
look forward to sharing this time with them.
That is all for now... please email with questions.
