We have found that mentoring can have a positive and profound impact on both
individual students and the overall culture and climate of our school. Through
our mentoring program, our goal is to establish meaningful connections. The
mentor program at Marshwood Middle School has two parts. The first part is a
traditional mentor program where older students and adults are matched with
younger students, or "pals". The second piece to the mentor program is
"advisory buddies" where each homeroom is matched with a different homeroom
from a different grade.
Effective mentors are trustworthy, caring individuals who provide support for
their "pals" as they face transitions and new experiences. 8th Grade students
are invited to apply to participate as a mentor. Student mentors are selected
based on academic standing, proven responsibility and reliability, excellent
citizenship, strong leadership skills, and team recommendations.
Once a peer mentor is matched with a "pal," they are expected to meet weekly
to discuss academic issues and personal interests. During their time
together the mentor is able to provide support, guidance and/or tutoring if
and when needed.
Advisory buddies are matched at the beginning of the year and are scheduled to
meet once per week. Through the weekly meeting, students have the opportunity
to make connections through community service activities, educational games,
and fun celebrations.
