Feb 6    This next month,  Feb 6-Mar 9,
sixth grade students will be engaged in an investigative study.
Students will select a topic of interest and conduct their own
experiment related to this topic.  On March 9, we will host a
Science Expo here in the sixth grade classrooms where all
projects will be on display and students will share what they
      learned.

Jan 13
*All sixth graders will be visiting the Gulf of
Maine Research Institute (GMRI) in Portland within the next few weeks.  The
       Bodwell
team students will go on Jan 30 and Bridge team will go on Feb 17.
This unique program promotes scientific thinking while engaging each student
in several hands-on investigations.  In addition they are introduced to the
research and daily work that is being conducted right nearby in the Gulf
of Maine.  There is no cost to students.  More specific information and
permission slips for Bridge team students will be sent home the last week of
       January.

Jan 3-6   Happy New Year to all families!
Just a reminder to everyone that students are most welcome to stay after school
for extra help, review or just to catch up if they have been absent due to illness.
Monday through Wednesdays are usually best for me, but students can check
with me if a special time is needed.  Also, there may be a few students who will
be asked to stay if repeated requests to complete work are not honored.

Nov 28- Dec 2
It was so very disappointing to not have a Star Party this week especially with the
exceptionally warm weather we have been enjoying each night. Hopefully, another
opportunity will become available for us.
Nonetheless, students are encouraged to get outdoors in the early evening to "look
up" and begin searching for the visible planets and constellations we are discussing
        in class.

October 11-14
While we are still several weeks away from starting our Astronomy study, I just
wanted to ask everyone to start looking "UP."  This week, with a beautiful full moon
is also the opportunity to see planet Jupiter coming very close to that full moon.
The very, very bright object you see appearing nightly and closest to the moon on
Oct 13  is Jupiter.  Watch and see how its position in the sky (relative to the moon)
        changes nightly.
Sixth grade students and families will be invited to our annual Star Party in early
November.  Please watch for further details.

Reminder
Next week,  October 3-5, (Mon, Tues & Wed) NECAP testing each
                                                     morning.
Most students will be in homerooms during the morning testing periods. Notes
have been sent home with students requesting help in providing nutritious
snacks each morning. Fruit, cheese, crackers, nutri-grain bars, juice etc. are all
           welcomed and appreciated.
Monday students will have only academic blocks 1 & 2; allied arts block 5 .
Tuesday students will have only academic blocks 4 & 6; allied arts block 5.
Wednesday (late start) no academic blocks;  allied arts block 5 and HR.

September
 2011-2012

Welcome to all new sixth graders and their families.  Science is going to be, hopefully, a class students enjoy and are challenged.  The learning goals and curriculum of instruction are based on program standards aligned with the National Science Education Standards, Benchmarks for Science Literacy and the Maine Learning Results.  These standards emphasize science knowledge and teaching practices that promote the development of scientifically literate citizens.  As the first year of the Middle Year Program in an IB school, students will engage in many hands-on lab activities, several unique projects, class discussions, and an independent investigation.

    Curriculum Overview
The areas of study this year include:   Life Science...Cell Investigations
                                                           Astronomy & Space
                                                           Chemistry
                                                           Forces & Motion
                                                           Energy/Solar Car
                                                           Science Process Skills

These topics of study are new to most students so there is usually high interest and each has engaging activities that develop science concepts through the process of scientific inquiry. It is hoped that students see how science is woven into everyday life and that it is not mysterious, nor
incomprehensible.

   Participation/Preparedness
Students are asked to be willing, be ready, and have that "can-do" attitude each day.
Please bring a 3-ring binder (notebook), your assignment planner and a pencil so you are prepared.
