Hoping everyone received the Solar Car information letter
that was sent home last Friday. SOLAR CAR RACE DAY
is scheduled for Tuesday, June 5 and we welcome parents
to join us to make this a successful day for your children.
As you may have heard, this is a problem solving activity
where student teams of four, design, construct and then
race their solar cars against other sixth grade teams.
MSK is a state qualifying center so the very best of our cars
in the areas of speed, technical merit and creative design, will
be selected to represent MSK at the state competition.
Please consider helping us out if your schedule allows.
We need lane timers, score keepers, mechanics, judges, and
help with registration and inspection.
Compete the form and send it into school with your child or
you can email me: lblatt@rsu21.net.
I also will be happy to answer any questions about the day!

Finishing up most chemistry related work this week.
Next week we incorporate the IB design cycle into our work
as we begin studying energy and forces through the design
and construction of a working Mousetrap Car. Each student
will receive supplies and direction in the design process and
the building of a small wooden vehicle powered by a single
mousetrap. Individual student design, building skills and
concept knowledge will be developed and provide the
foundation needed for the Solar Car team project that
really culminates the 6th grade science year.

Joan Chamberlain, former teacher and visiting astronomer,
introduced the "GLOBE at Night" program to each science
class yesterday. This worldwide citizen science campaign is
intended to broaden awareness about the effects of light
pollution across our globe. Students/families are asked to view
the constellation ORION and record the magnitude
(brightness) of its most
visible stars (and nearby area).
The viewing and reporting can be
least one hour after sunset any night
March 22. Mrs. Chamberlain's presentation included
remarkable views of Earth from space, as well as research
showing the effects on excess lighting most notably impacting
habitats and wasted energy resources.
The data students provide will be reported to the GLOBE
online database to be analyzed and provide a new map
Students have each been given the reporting form with
the magnitude charts to use in their observation.

Just to confirm with students that due to the snow day today,
science projects (display board, written work and class
presentations) will have the due date extended from Monday,
3/5 to Tuesday, 3/6. This was mentioned in most classes
yesterday, but block 6 academic classes did not meet so time
could be devoted to Enterprise City campaign speeches.
Science Expo Day is set for next Wednesday, March 7. The
afternoon is primarily set for students, teachers and classes
to view and share projects with each other starting at 1:00PM.
Parents are certainly welcome to stop by if their afternoon
Feb 13-17
Reminder that permissions slips need to be in for the Gulf of
Maine Research Institute (GMRI) field trip scheduled for this
Friday, February 17. (Students were asked to have them them in by Mon, Feb 13)
No student can participate without the completed form.
Students have been assigned either to the AM session and they
will return to school by noon, or the PM session where they will
return in time
to take the late bus at 3:50. Parents may pick up
their child at that 3:50 time if that is more convenient.
No money is needed for this trip as all of the transportation
and funding is provided by the GMRI sponsors.
Tri-fold display boards are available for order through science
class. A note about the Science Expo, planning for the science
project and a display board ordering form was sent home at
the end of last week. White boards are $3.50 and colored are
$4.00. Wed, Feb 15 is the last day to order through school.
Feb 6 This next month, Feb 6-Mar 7,
sixth grade students will be engaged in an investigative study.
Students will select a topic of interest and conduct their own
experiment related to this topic. On March 7, we will host a
Science Expo here in the sixth grade classrooms where all
projects will be on display and students will share what they
learned.
Jan 13
*All sixth graders will be visiting the Gulf of
Maine Research Institute (GMRI) in Portland within the next few weeks. The
Bodwell team students will go on Jan 30 and Bridge team will go on Feb 17.
This unique program promotes scientific thinking while engaging each student
in several hands-on investigations. In addition they are introduced to the
research and daily work that is being conducted right nearby in the Gulf
of Maine. There is no cost to students. More specific information and
permission slips for Bridge team students will be sent home the last week of
January.
Jan 3-6 Happy New Year to all families!
Just a reminder to everyone that students are most welcome to stay after school
for extra help, review or just to catch up if they have been absent due to illness.
Monday through Wednesdays are usually best for me, but students can check
with me if a special time is needed. Also, there may be a few students who will
be asked to stay if repeated requests to complete work are not honored.
Nov 28- Dec 2
It was so very disappointing to not have a Star Party this week especially with the
exceptionally warm weather we have been enjoying each night. Hopefully, another
opportunity will become available for us.
Nonetheless, students are encouraged to get outdoors in the early evening to "look
up" and begin searching for the visible planets and constellations we are discussing
in class.
October 11-14
While we are still several weeks away from starting our Astronomy study, I just
wanted to ask everyone to start looking "UP." This week, with a beautiful full moon
is also the opportunity to see planet Jupiter coming very close to that full moon.
The very, very bright object you see appearing nightly and closest to the moon on
Oct 13 is Jupiter. Watch and see how its position in the sky (relative to the moon)
changes nightly.
Sixth grade students and families will be invited to our annual Star Party in early
November. Please watch for further details.
Reminder
Next week, October 3-5, (Mon, Tues & Wed) NECAP testing each
morning.
Most students will be in homerooms during the morning testing periods. Notes
have been sent home with students requesting help in providing nutritious
snacks each morning. Fruit, cheese, crackers, nutri-grain bars, juice etc. are all
welcomed and appreciated.
Monday students will have only academic blocks 1 & 2; allied arts block 5 .
Tuesday students will have only academic blocks 4 & 6; allied arts block 5.
Wednesday (late start) no academic blocks; allied arts block 5 and HR.
