Course Syllabus                                                                                 Subject: Algebra 1 (AY)

Instructor: Mrs. L. Bayles                                                               2011 – 2012 School year

 

COURSE OBJECTIVE:   Students will learn algebraic concepts using collaborative learning and a self-paced computer support program.

 

COURSE BREAKDOWN:  (Students will cover the following concepts) (Scheduling subject to change)

            Period 1 – Multiple data representations, Ratios and percents, Solving linear equations, The  

                              Coordinate Plane, Functions, Relations, Inequalities, and Real Number Properties

            Period 2 – Representing Linear Functions, Slope, Slope-intercept, Equations of lines, Literal

                              Equations, Lines of Best Fit, and Linear Regression

            Period 3 – Solving Linear Systems, Quadratic Functions, Square Roots and Radicals, and The

                              Quadratic Formula

            Period 4 – Binomials, Polynomials, Basic Operations using Polynomials and Factoring Polynomials

HOMEWORK POLICY

      Students are expected to complete homework the day it is assigned. Homework assignments are designed to review and reinforce covered concepts. Homework includes completing class assignments (GRADED AS CLASSWORK), working on computer units, practice assignments, and reviewing/studying notes daily. Late assignments will only be accepted for excused absences. Homework assignments will be due the day the student returns to school. 

 

MAKE-UP POLICY

      Students will ONLY be allowed to make up missed assignments when they have an excused absence. All other missing assignments will receive a grade of zero.  Students are responsible for asking for their makeup work when they return to school. Make-up work is given after school during the seventh hour. Students will have the same amount of time to makeup assignments as they were absent (i.e. 2 days absent, 2 days to make up missed assignments.) Students must schedule missed quizzes and tests for make-up as soon as they return to school.  Assignments not turned in within the given time will not receive any credit.

• ASK QUESTIONS/SEEK HELP WHEN NEEDED (DURING CLASS OR AFTER SCHOOL)

CLASS PROCEDURES

Entering the classroom:

                        • Sharpen pencils on the way to your seat

                        • Take out supplies

                        • BE IN YOUR SEAT COMPLETING “DO NOW”, WITHOUT TALKING,

                           WHEN THE TARDY BELL RINGS

 

            Independent work:

                        • Have all supplies out on your desk

                        • Listen to, and follow assignment directions

                        • Stay in your seat and raise your hand if you need assistance

                        • DO NOT TALK TO CLASSMATES

 

            Discussion activity

                        • Remain seated during discussion

                        • Face the front of the room

                        • Only speak when you raise your hand and have been

                          acknowledged

                        • Pay attention and write down notes

 

            Small Groups:

                        • Have all supplies out on your desk

                        • Remain seated and raise your hand for assistance

                        • Talk in a low (whispering) voice to your group members only

                        • Listen for the attention cue and then stop talking

 

            Test Taking:

                        • Clear desks of everything except pencils, calculator and scrap

                           Paper

                        • Remain in your seat and raise your hand for help

                        • No talking to classmates during the test (Talking will result in a ‘0’)

                        • Keep your eyes on your own paper (Cheating will result in a ‘0’)

 

            Dismissal

                        • Gather all of your belongings

                        • Clean off table/PUSH IN YOUR CHAIRS

                        • Use low voices while exiting the room

                        • WALK, don’t run out of the room
