Homework and Grading

Student Planners:

Each child is provided with a planner at the beginning of the school year.
This is expected to last throughout the year. Your child will need to record
assignments daily and you must sign the planner before your child comes back
to school the next morning. This is also a good place for you to write down
any questions or comments that you may have for me, as I will be checking
planners each day. If a child looses a planner, the cost to replace it is
$3.50.

Homework:

Work that is not completed in class is to be taken home, completed and
turned in at the beginning of the next school day. Failure to turn in daily
work on time will result in a lowered grade for daily assignments and/or on
select graded assignments. Occasionally, a special homework project will be
assigned. In that case, special instructions and a due date will be given.

Reading is ALWAYS homework. Your child should be spending 15-20 minutes a
night reading for enjoyment and/or to fulfill his/her AR goal. Each child
has a goal of at least 5 points a month.

If there are no written homework assignments, your child should spend an
established amount of time on…

 - Practicing math facts
 - Cursive writing
 - Spelling practice

Daily Work:

Daily Work is graded on completeness and accuracy. You will see the number
wrong at the top of the page and a check, check+, or check-. These marks are
kept in my grade book and compile a grade for daily assignments.

Select Graded Assignments:

Select Graded Assignmentsreceive a percentage grade. That grade is recorded
in my grade book. Any paper that comes home with a percentage grade on top
goes in the grade book.

Tests and Quizzes:

Tests and Quizzes make up a significant part of a student’s grade. I want
students to be prepared for tests and quizzes so we spend a lot of time
reviewing in class. I will ALWAYS send home a study guide for tests.
Students will be warned about quizzes, but will not receive a study guide
for them. All tests and quizzes will be completed at school and will not be
taken home until they are graded and we have reviewed them.

Spelling:

A spelling pre-test is given each Friday after the spelling test. The
student's score on the pre-test will determine their list of words for the
next week. If the child receives 0 or 1 wrong on the pre-test, he or she
will work from a more challenging list. Each student receives 2 copies of
their spelling list on Monday; one to keep at school and one to take home in
their planner. Students are expected to study throughout the week for
Friday's test.
